Floyd fans... David Gilmour vs Roger Waters?

I know we'll never see a Pink Floyd reunion, now that Rick Wright has passed away, but whose solo albums do you think captures the Pink Floyd sound better... David Gilmour or Roger Waters? Gilmour's "Live in Gdańsk" album has several Floyd tracks that seriously rock. But, then again, so does Waters' "In the Flesh".

Update:

Great answer, Anthony!

Update 2:

Damn, two Anthony's. I meant the first one. Anthony N. LOL!!!

Actually, purists say Syd Barrett. He really couldn't technically play his instrument very well, so that's why their early stuff is so noisy and dense.

As for the other two - it depends on which Floyd is your cup-o-tea... If it's the commercial sounding one, then David Gilmour, who's entire style is more approachable and easier to listen to. If you want depth, lyric genius and true chance taking, then Roger Waters all the way.

Well, I'm about the music more than the lyrics. Gilmour is my favorite guitarist, and it's his work that keeps me coming back to Pink Floyd, for the most part. Plus, he was born on my birthday. ;)

I give Waters all the credit in the world for coming up with the lyrical themes and the big concepts. He's a brilliant guy. But put a gun to my head, and I have to go with Gilmour.

  • Well it really depends what you define as the Pink Floyd sound.

Most would say David Gilmour, as many people have trouble grasping the more complex nature of Roger Water's songwriting, as it is less easily accessible.

Some would even say Syd Barrett, especially for fans of early Floyd.

As for what I think, I really can't choose between them. I even really like Barrett's stuff, although, as with Roger's solo work, it is a bit harder to get in to.
