What does the symbol that looks like a 7 mean in dulcimer or guitar music ?

I have recently started playing the dulcimer . When reading tabs I have come across a symbol that looks like a 7 with a ball at the begining . Can you explain what it means ? Thanks

the 7 represents the 7th note of the scale, so if you are playing in the key of C, the 7th note is b flat (Bb)

in a chord, the 7th note is usually (but not always) played as the 4th note.

That's the symbol for a diminished 7th chord, which is made up of 3 superimposed minor 3rds. That would consist of:

    Root

    Minor 3rd

    Diminished 5th (tritone)

    Diminished 7th

If the chord were a C diminished 7, the notes would be C, Eb, Gb, Bb.

It sounds to me like a 1/8 note rest, if it is on the staff of music. I have no idea if it is anywhere else on the page.
