what is the x(t)?? according to Kreyzig's text, its not the obvious, xti -ytj.

Remember that dx/dt is the velocity in a 1 dimensional case.
So it is like solving dx/dt = x - y. That does not look straight-forward.
You may have to check the definition of velocity in your textbook.
It could be as complicated as v^2 = (dx/dt)^2 + (dy/dt)^2
