Should the National Anthem be changed?

Okay...before you tar and feather me, hear me out...

I have taken to account the circumstances surrounding our anthem, and while it is a moving piece, i feel that it should be changed.

We all know that the National Anthem was written by Francis Scott Key...that's Day 1 stuff, right? But how many know that it was a song written to an old English drinking song?

Don't get me wrong, i believe that Mr. Key had nothing but good intentions upon this inspiration, the coincidence of the melody set aside.

But what of America The Beautiful or Stars & Stripes Forever? why are those songs considered to be inferior? Both songs happened to be written by American citizens. Whereas the Star Spangled Banner was written by a Frenchman. We already have two things of French heritage as symbols of our nation: Democracy and the Statue Of Liberty.

Shouldn't our Anthem be one of our own? For us, by us?

See for yourself:

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL

written by Kathrine Lee Bates of Falmouth, MA(1859)

O' beautiful, for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America! God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.

O' beautiful, for pilgrim feet

Whose stern, impassioned stress

A thoroughfare for freedom beat

Across the wilderness!

America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw;

Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!

O' beautiful, for heroes proved

In liberating strife,

Who more than self their country loved

And mercy more than life!

America! America! May God thy gold refine,

'Til all success be nobleness, and ev'ry gain divine!

O' beautiful, for patriot dream

That sees beyond the years,

Thine alabaster cities gleam

Undimmed by human tears!

America! America! God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!

When broken down, the first stanza represents the prosperity of this great nation. Capturing the essence and beauty of our land.

In the second stanza, she also points out our perseverance to "make a go" following our independance from the United Kingdom.

The third and fourth stanzas honor our fallen soldiers who have laid down their lives for our freedom. If you ask me, those two verses alone will ever be present during this nation's lifespan.

Update:

Jesus freaking Christ...i ain't planning on storming our Nation's capital with a petition to change the damn thing...i just wanted to get a perspective from different people. I had no idea i'd be rail-roaded for asking the bloody question...

Update 2:

if i did, in fact, plan on choosing a song that best represents my patriotism, i'd definitely pick Merle Haggard's "Fightin' Side Of Me".

"...if you don't like it, leave it"

Doesn't everyone have the urge to sing the national anthem? Do you have a better option than the one now, which the people are likely to accept? What does national anthem have anything to do with monarchy? Our national anthem wasn't written during the day and age when monarchy was prevalent. I'm sorry that I'm answering with more questions but that's how I feel and in case you have some clarifications or if you feel that I have understood your question incorrectly then please explain. By the way which country are you from?

There was a movement to change it several decades ago based on the fact that very few people can actually sing the tune which is why we do not know the words. I think America the Beautiful would be a better choice, but people are in a war mindset since 9/11, so it is hopeless until everyone calms down.

And do you know another of our other patriotic songs , the one that goes "My country, 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty ... " is to the same tune as Britain's " God Save The Queen "?

No, I like " America The Beautiful " but just as another patriotic song, I am happy with " The Star Spangled Banner " being our national anthem and I did know its melodic source.

Incidentally, Democracy was not unique to France when we got it and as far as I am concerned they can have their Statue of Liberty back ..... France is not a nation that I have too much respect for based on their performance and inegrity in the two world wars of the 20th century and their failure to back, or even agree with the U.S. in recent conflicts.

I would love to see our anthem changed to America the Beautiful. As a singer, I know how hard The Star Spangled Banner is to sing and the fact that the tune is derived from a British drinking song is kind of embarrassing.

And did you know that Billy Joel wrote "It's Still Rock N Roll To Me" with the baseline from Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady, Lay?"

What difference does it make what the National Anthem is? Quite frankly, the first verse of the one we have now is much easier to sing at sporting events than America The Beautiful would be.

No, that's a terrible idea. Yes, that's a beautiful poem, but it's not the national anthem. Why change it now. Every American that has lived before us has put their hand over their heart and sang this anthem to our flag. It wouldn't feel right.

Anthems have a lot of history attached to them, and even though they aren't 'perfect' they follow a nation as they travel throughout time. Think of Germany... they still sing the SAME anthem as they did in WWII, only they leave out the 3rd stanza based on world domination.

Yeah, I just learned about that in history. I actually like that song though, because it's funny that it came from an English drinking song, i think that it shows a kind of quirkiness.

I disagree though all your reasons are good. I don't want to start a practice of changing our national heritage just because there is something better. There will always be something better. But this is the Anthem our great grandfathers sang and it should be the Anthem our Great, great grandchildren sing as well.

....The only thing I think American Anthem should change is the amount of lines... Seriously its kinda sad that many Americans cannot recite their national anthem. I'm lucky I only have to memorize 13 province and 5 lines for our anthem in Canada

  • I think "Grand Old Flag" is a far better song.
