How do I turn ideas into profits?

I have an awesome design for small animal shaped back-packs and maybe t-shirts and stuff. I have worked out the target market, where they would sell best etc. but I have no idea how to go about making this idea into a profitable business. Please help :)

I think the first step is to design and create a prototype.

Then, you can either patent your idea or present it to a design firm that would turn it into a marketable product (in this case, you'd only receive some sort of design commission).

If you want to start a business, you'll need an initial investment and a plan. It is important to be able to buy material for your product in bulk, to have an efficient way of producing a sizable quantity of your product, and a place to sell your product (such as a flea market, that's usually the best place to start). If you know someone who owns a business, you might ask about selling your product in their store. Locally owned business are the only ones this will work for when you're just starting.

Also, you'll need to work out a price that covers the cost-per-item, there's a good deal of math that goes into that, and if i tried to explain this answer would be too long. In short, you need to cover the materials used to make the item, plus a little bit more so that you can produce more than you initially did, and so that you make a profit.

The hope is that, in the long run, you won't have to produce the items by hand. If they become popular, you'll need to rent factory/ assembly space, but that would be in the distant future if you're just starting.

There's a reason why people go to school for business, it's not a simple thing to accomplish. But read up on owning / starting a business at a library and when you're knowledgeable enough you should be able to go for it!

    Good luck!
