Can anyone give me some puppy advice?

I recently added a Newfoundland puppy to my family, and while his a joy 95% of the time, his teething is driving us nuts! We are all covered with cuts and scratches from him chewing, chewing, chewing....

Update:

ok, he has every chew toy known to man...and he chews them too...its almost like the chewing of us is a comfort for him?

This is a normal puppy behavior that everyone has gone through when raising puppies. Do your best to get through it and be comforted in the knowledge that you are not alone.

Between 4 and 6 months puppies will loose their milk teeth (baby teeth}and get their adult teeth in. This is a very big breed. You need to break this chewing habit before he destroys everything. Think of him as a baby. Their gums hurt so they chew cause it helps the teeth to break through. Give him a bowl of ice cubes instead of water. He will get his water and numb his gums at the same time. I would stay away from rawhide. It`s a good teething tool but most puppies will swallow big pieces. Rawhide is non digest able and has no nourishment. Pups are always hungry . Feed him 2 or 3 times a day with small amounts rather than 1 big meal. I have a 128 lb Bull-Mastiff/Am-Staff. I got her at 8 wks. I broke her real fast of the chewing habit. Otherwise they will chew you and everything else. What I do recommend is milkbones inbetween meals. They will help with the teething and their hunger and will brush their teeth. I also like pressed nylon bones. You can find them at any pet store. As hard as they try they won`t splinter or break the bone. They last forever. Just wash them every so often. So pups chew cause they are hungry and some do it cause their gums hurt. I really like the ice cubes and so do they. The store sell this big rubber thing with a hole in it. You can put a little peanut butter in it. It will help with the teething and keep him busy . I think they sell teething gel. Try that. Look at the ingredients, you might be able to buy cheaper baby gel. The pet stores are so expensive. Good luck. Train now, you won`t be sorry later. Good luck.

Hello, i am the owner of a pedigree chihuahua, Lula.

As you are saying that you're Newfoundland Puppy is chewing on your hands, i wanted to answer your question because my puppy used to do the same. At first it was just play fighting (which was a bad idea in the first place, i know!) But then as she grew older the chewing started to get harder and harder.

All we did was to tell her firmly no, also when she came up to us to try and have a little chew we used to just put a toy in front of her and she would chew that instead. Eventually it stopped.

All i would advise you to do is to not encourage the chewing, which im sure your not. Tell him hes a bad dog when he trys to chew, and reward him when he doesnt chew your hands!

Also it might be an attention thing, so play with him more, make sure he has lots of great things to play with, plus regular walks and so forth.

    Thankyou :D

    Those puppies are ADORABLE!

anyway... i understand the chewing! Puppies always chew on everything! When he starts to chew on you or a member on your family, you need to push him off, and say NO in a very firm voice, then give him one of his toys. When he starts chewing on his toys, praise him! It's going to take some getting used to for him, since he has been used to biting you. Just keep at him and he will know that if he starts, he will get a mean no in return.

Whenever he starts chewing on you, give him a firm NO and redirect him to one of his own toys to chew on...if he doesn't stop, you can hide some of his toys and give them to him only when you see that he is searching for them..not all the toys together or he will get easily bored and start chewing your hands again:) i bought a puppy recently too and all he did was trying to chew our feet and hands..:P but now doing this for a little time helped a lot:)

  • the dollar store has rope toys that he can chew to his hearts content, Dogs chew, Puppies chew everything you need to train him now not to bite or scratch.

Do not wait. The wrope thingy tied like a bone you can get a lot of mileage out of. Obedience training classes might be a good idea.

    Congrats on your new addition!

The sooner you stop him chewing on you the better. This could lead to aggressive adult behavior and I know you don't want that.

The only piece of advice I can offer other than what has already been given is this:

When I was a kid my sister chewed her fingernails CONSTANTLY. My parents found a sort of "polish" that tasted horrible and that ended the nail biting. I wonder if there is such a product you could put on your skin to hinder the chewing along with the firm "NO!"?

    Good luck to you!

After you have done the push away and say no to the puppy and give it a toy to show what's good to chew, if it's still mouthing you then take his lip and pinch it against his teeth and say no bite in a very firm voice.

Behavior training is tough but must be consistent from everyone. As to a chew toy, try a deer antler. We purchased one for our dog. Impossible to chew up. If the dog loses interest, just run water over it to 'reflavorize'. They are expensive, but last forever! Good luck with your horse! Ours is a 75 pound male standard poodle that still thinks he is a lap dog! lol

Buy him some chew toys. Also they have some very healthy puppy chewing bones at Petsmart you can buy

Do not let him chew on you or he will continue to do this as a adult. Buy his lots of chew toys, and puppy safe bones like nylabones
