Which is more serious -- reckless driving or speeding?

Which is considered the more serious charge? Which gives you "points"? Or do both? I got a speeding ticket recently and was just wondering because I heard someone refer to a speeding ticket of theirs that got "knocked down" to only being reckless driving, but I had always thought that reckless driving was more serious..

The person you heard may have been charged with Reckless Endangerment by virtue of their abnormally high speed. As such, it would have been a reduction in the offense when lowering the conviction to a Reckless Driving!

There are several charges to include 1) Speeding (under 20-25mph above the limit); 2) Careless or Reckless Driving (over 25mph above the limit); and 3) Reckless Endangerment (conduct while driving that did or could cause serious injury or death to another).

I live in California, and I know that over here both reckless driving and speeding both give you points on your record. What you need to know are the following things:

Here, in CA, depending on how fast you're going, you could be ticketed for speeding AND reckless driving at the same time.

You can get that ticket removed from your record! If this is your first ticket, you can do online traffic school to make up for it. But don't get another one for 2 years, because that's how long it will be to become eligible for it again.

One last thing you can do is show up to court on the date you were given. A lot of times traffic cops have better things to do, so they don't show up to court. If you show up, and the officer doesn't, they void the ticket. I wouldn't recommend this though if you live in a small town or county, as there might be less to do for the traffic cops there.

    Hope this helps!

in minnesota reckless driving is worse than a speeding ticket. but if you are speeding 15 mph over the speed limit that is considered reckless driving as well. 14 mph or less is not considered reckless driving.

Don't listen to anyone who doesn't have a license to practice law in your area. Especially that person. They've given you bad advice that can do more harm than good. Reckless driving is generally thought of as being a more serious issue because the driver is not paying attention to the road or driving in such a careless manner they could cause an accident.

Now, if you have been charged with reckless driving, call an attorney and see what you can do about it. Laws and fines vary from state to state.

    Somebody told you nonsense.

If you're speeding by a certain amount over the limit (usually 25 or more), that's automatically deemed reckless driving. If it's an amount less than that, speeding is not as serious an offense. Both will give you points on your license.

In California, Reckless driving can be a felony terrorist act, depending on how you are charged.

I don't think you can clearly distinguish which is more serious. Both are just as dangerous. I do believe there is no clear cut answer on this one. They both involve breaking the law so there're both serious.
