Why is there so much antipathy towards the British monarchy on Yahoo Answers?
I don't understand the root of the anger and resentment towards the British monarchy around here...
If you come on this site as often as I do you know what I mean...
The royals cost the British public less than a pound per person per year...a British pound is about $1.50...
The British monarchy is mind-bogglingly ancient...there is perhaps ONE institution left in the world that existed when the kingdoms of England and Scotland came into being...and that's the Papacy. The British monarchy dates back to at least the 7th century AD...WHY in the world would you want to get rid of something as ancient and special as that?
Especially since the queen and her family are not tyrants...they are not forcing the country into unjust wars...or taxing them too heavily...
You might as well demolish Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and every castle and manor house across the British Isles..

Simply because they are jealous that they are NOT King or Queen of the their own country. Quite sad really, there so jealous they express anger and hatred towards them.
If we had an almighty President, it would cost us FAR more money! Something like £3 per person for their higher security, inauguration every four years and their election campaigns that, if they win, they get back every penny they invested by the people on voted them in!
Also, every single person in the Royal family have duties, NONE though do as much as the Monarch, annual/weekly/monthly events, giving the PM advice, etc etc.
It is JUST ONE POUND PEOPLE! People on here act as if they work for years on end to give the Monarch's there blood!
If you are thick as ****, and earn £5.35 an hour, for one of them hundreds of hours you work each year, you will only get £4.35, JUST ONE POUND PER YEAR! JEEEEZ!

In the UK the monarchy has a 80% approval rating, this is pretty good compared to the approval of other governments around the world.
So as with all governments there are people that disagree, there will always be the rich and the poor and there will always be resentment between the two.
The people that complain on here from the UK are generally the from that 20% although there are many more who complain about other aspects of the monarchy but still would not like a republic.
A lot of disagreement on here comes from Americans who have been brought up being told that the USA is the only free country in the world, told about FREEDOM and how it was won from the evil British Empire.
The stereotypical view of the UK that these americans have show the UK as a nation of people who give 50% of our wages to a family that give nothing in return.
I am not saying all americans think like this but on the whole many do, I have no problem with this as the USA is an other country and I don't expect UK history to be taught there.
EDIT: Tracy seems to be a Communist...
EDIT,CLO: I have said that People from the UK complain about the monarchy, I am not denying that but I have noticed that many ranting questions and answers come from americans believing their system of government is the only way.

I know what you mean. Republicans remind me of some smirking evil kid in a park that goes around squashing butterflies. However, it's just one of the many symptoms of the slow painful crawl towards eventual death Great Britain has been enduring the past 12 years or so. And since I'm only 24 I get the joyous honor of watching it all fall down. It makes one want to get in a time machine and tell all those that died in WW2 not to bother.

It is easy for you to say being not British
Have you obtained your information from "reliable" sources IE the media who are briefed on a regular basis on how to keep the myth making going
Now if you were to use other more reliable sources and see the truth of this dysfunctional family You may come to understand the resentment many of us feel and not being able to do anything about it Well there is no democracy regarding these I am afraid
Buck House by the way would make wonderful accommodation for the homeless and others who are less fortunate I would suggest

What are you? In line for the crown or something? I haven't seen SO much of it, but the people who pay for the British monarchs to live, and live well, have a right to an opinion as to whether or not they'd like to continue to support, not only the Queen but her extended family, in a lavish lifestyle that most of those who work hard to pay for it will never be a part of. You, too, have a right to your opinion to keep it, since you also, I think, pay for them to live in that way.
As an American, I'd like to see it continue, but I don't pay for them to live extravagantly while the British Monarchs do basically nothing. If it were up to me, I'd want them more involved in the running of the country and in politics, but it isn't up to me because I don't pay for them.
If I were struggling in the UK as my family are struggling here to provide for my family, I might be a bit ticked off that I also have to pay for the British Monarchy to live so high. But it really isn't any of my business. I suggest you take your complaints to the UK Yahoo Answers since they are the ones who are effected by it.

It's mainly non-Brits (most of whom have never been to the UK and have never talked to Brits about the Queen and Royal family) who attack the monarchy on Yahoo Answers, Brits generally don't.
According to most polls the monarchy is supported by over 70% of the British people.
