UC surgery has two types that I am aware of. One is the complete removal of the large intestine and colon which results in a cholostomy bag for the rest of your life. The second is a shortening of the large intestine but it remains connected to your colon. Which results in frequent bowel movements due to the shortened intestine.
Both, I believe, are curative, have a high success rate and result in a completely acceptible standard of living afterwards. Good luck to your sister.
