how come goal tending is illegal in basketball but not in hockey?

What would you determine goaltending in hockey? It is something that would be impossible to determine. Even if you were able to come to a consensus on what goaltending was, it would slow the game down extremely while the officials tried to determine the call. Some of these slapshots travel at over 100mph, something that would make it very difficult to see.
Also, hockey has a designated goaltender... wouldn't it be stupid to have a goaltending rule when there is a position named 'goaltender'?

how do you goaltend in hockey? in basketball u can just keep your hand in the basket, and its impossible to score. different in hockey i guess

because if it's legal then all of the basketball player can just cover the rim anytime to stop the opposing team.
