Science/Math question?

The question is-

The speed of light is 3 x 10(to the 8th) m/sec. How long does it take light to travel the 149 x 10(to the 9th) m distance from the sun to the Earth?

Please show your work or explain how to do it.

    We know that Time = Distance / Speed

    Time taken = (149 x 10^9)/ 3 x 10^8

    => 496.7 seconds

    => 8.3 minutes

    Its about 8 minutes or 480 seconds. To find out divide the distance by the speed of light

  • 1 decade ago

    Per 1 second light travels 3x10^8 m

    X sec 149x10^9

    X=1490x10^8/3x10^8= 497sec.

    or divide by 60= about 8.28 min. or

    8min 5 sec

    1 sec = 3 x 10(pow8) meters

    ? Sec = 149 x 10(pow 9) meters = 1490 x 10 (pow 8)

    Cross Multiplying, we get ->

    ? sec = 1490 x 10 pow(8) / (3 x 10 pow(8) )

    = 1490 / 3

    = 496.67 seconds

    And that's your answer.

    Distance equals rate times time.

    d = r * t

    149x10^9 = 3x10^8 * t

    t = 149x10^9 / 3x10^8

    t = 496 seconds = 8 minutes and 16 seconds

    149000000000 / 300000000

    1490 / 3

    496 1/3 seconds

    (1490 / 3) / 60

    1490 / 180

    149 / 18

    8 5/18 minutes

    ~8.2722222 minutes
