Musicians of R&P: Any interest in an open music challenge?

Anyone interested in a music challenge?

I imagine it going down like this: we pick either a song that everyone has to cover or an album that everyone must pick a song off of to cover. we give participants a couple weeks or a month to prepare and then we all post are results. we would leave the results question open for a week and then let everyone vote.

MQ: anyone interested?

MQ2: any suggestions for how the challenge might go (if you dont like something about my preliminary idea)?

MQ3: any suggestions for what we should pick to cover?

Update:

I am thinking for the song... something that everyone more or less knows, something that takes well to being covered and something that is open to very diverse arangements so people can do it in the style that they are interested in.

Update 2:

prof- i know what you mean... i am not all that great either, but i love screwing around in my studio and would like an excuse to push myself. i would hope no one would be too embarassed to post something.

Update 3:

bob- do you mean "summertime blues" or "summertime"? i had considered "summertime" as a possibility as one of the most covered songs in history.

Update 4:

Ok here is what I am thinking:

I think I should post this a few more time over the next week or so to make sure that everyone who might participate knows about it. I am thinking next thursday I'll have a vote on what song to do. At that point I will email an update to anyone who expressed interest.

Update 5:

glen g- i think all 5 of those songs are more or less the type that would work. good picks.

Update 6:

also i think i might give people the option of submit anonymously by emailing a link to me and i will put the link on the additional details. if we do this i was to get submissions from all talent levels and i dont want anyone to be discouraged.

Bob saw into your question something I don't see in it, But I like that. "Covered Songs", the various artists.

My choice for your consideration to apply for voting on:

    You Really Got Me

    Hey Joe

    I Shot the Sheriff

    Good Morning Little School Girl

    Stand by Me

    OHHH excuuuuse me

edit. sometimes I just forget to look at the title of the question. I guess that is where I went wrong.

But glad you like my choices. and I look forward to the results.

I think it sounds like a great idea. I would try participating maybe, but my guitar amp is busted at the moment and I don't have the money to buy a new one. However, I do love to mess around with songs on the audio editing programs I have on my computer. I've reworked a few songs already for fun, so maybe I could just do that?

I'm definitely intrigued. I'm not nearly at the caliber of most R&P musicians, but I'd take a crack at it, just can't guarantee that I'd submit. I'd like the exercise anyways.

I'll think of possible suggestions... hmmm... Selfishly, I like the idea of keeping it simpler. I also think it would be interesting to see how people put their stamp on something.

    Hi Wire,

Yeah, I'm the same way (I like to tinker, at least I used to a lot). I'm a bit rusty these days though, and really it just comes down to whether or not I'd get frustrated and not be able to finish. I think it's a really great idea though. I've actually been thinking about trying to use laying down a cover or two to try to get some momentum going towards using my home rig.

I think thats a really cool idea! Unfortunately I play bass, and I dont really think Im that good yet. Plus a bass cover wouldnt be as cool as guitar... But I think it would be neat for other people to do. I would really like to see the results!

    Sounds good to me!

    MQ: Definitely

MQ3: Yesterday - The Beatles (Begin with something more simple)

EDIT: what about someone suggests a chord progression and style and mix up the creativity for budding musicians

Good idea! We could cover "Summertime Blues." I've heard plenty of covers of that one and there is a wide range--it'd be interesting to see other people's take on it.

**"Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran. Covered by The Who, Blue Cheer, and many others...

    MA: Very interested

MA2: I think it will go pretty good. I'm sure it won't be hard to find a song.

MA3: I'll try to remember to edit.
