How do I notify my current employer that I am taking a new job?

I have a promotion that I have accepted which starts 3-9-09. How do I tell my supervisor that I am leaving?

You have just enough time to provide 2 weeks notice. If you're on good terms, just write a quick letter saying "thank you for the opportunity to learn and grow with your company. However, I have accepted a position at another company that I feel will utilize my skills (blah blah blah give reasons here). Therefore, please accept my resignation effective (date)."

This will give the company you work for now time to prepare departure paperwork and prepare your final paycheck (you might have some vacation or sick time to cash out). There is usually exit paperwork to be filled out to make sure everything is accounted for on both your end and their end.

    Hand deliver this letter. Congratulations!
