Simple but great tasting vs Posh food at a wedding?

Are the more fancy/exotic looking platters better than something perhaps better known/an old favourite to placate wedding guests.

I'd prefer the simple, but great tasting, foods.

I would go with better known/an old favourite. Fancy/exotic looking ones are all about showing off if they don't also taste great. Giving great tasting food sends the message that it about making the guest welcome and ensuring they have a good time. Just my opinion. Remember - weddings are about sharing the committment of your marraige with people you love. More and more it is about the "wedding" and putting on a good show for people which isn't really the point.

I would say stick to waht everybody knows. For my wedding we just had Chicken breasts, mashed potatoes, green beans and stuffing. Everyone raved about the food- even my dad who tried endlessly to get me to change our menu saying it would be the proverbial wedding "rubber chicken" that everyone hates. He admitted he was wrong. My cousin then served the exact same thing at HER wedding reception (held at the same hotel) three months later 'cause she liked it so much!

At mine, we also had pizzas brought out around 10:30 pm for people to snack on after drinking and dancing. That was a hit too. My dad also opposed this idea, then afterwards he said that it was the neatest idea.

Server what everybody knows- it's the easiest way to make guests feel comfortable rather than out-of-place because they don't know what a food is or how to eat it.

I'm not sure why platters of old favorites can't be decorated to look "fancy." ... Do the old favorites, but garnish them beautifully. Put veggie dips into hollowed-out bell peppers, and put some veggie birds or roses on the plate ; frosted grapes and dipped strawberries for other platters, etc.
