I have an old laptop which originally came with XP os.
CPU: Mobile AMD Athlon XP, 1866 MHz 2500+ and 448 MB.
is it recommended to upgrade to vista and if so what version vista,(home basic, business, home premium, ultimate) or will it be better to go back to XP?
Thanks

In case you ever want to test this on another computer, Microsoft puts out a free analyzer for Vista upgrades found here:

No. Not even close.
I mean, I'm assuming 448 MB refers to ram. That is some seriously low ram. You need AT LEAST 1GB of ram for ultimate, and it really doesn't work well unless you have 2+GBs of RAM.

I would not put Vista on it even if it could tun it. 448 meg of memory won't even come close to running Vista

no it will it. You don't have enough ram. You need 512 ram atleast for home basic, 1 gb of ram for the rest.
For best effect, it is suggeted it to have a mutli-core processor and 2 gb of ram. It might be better to stay with xp.

Your laptop would explode, Vista will run with 1gb but it is recommended to have at least 2gbs of ram.
