Why don't African Americans ever believe me when I tell them I'm Mexican (pic)?
Not just African Americans, everyone in general but mostly African Americans. With Latinos I can speak Spanish to them and they can tell by my accent that I am in fact Mexican.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/vilard23/...
African Americans always say "No way, you gotta be Dominican or Puerto Rican" and I know that black Mexicans are really rare because we only account for 1% of Mexico's population and we are all either mixed with Indian or White (Spanish and more rarely French) but that doesn't mean that there aren't any at all.
I made a friend a few years back who was Brazilian and she was Asian and I could really relate to her because people never thought of her as a Brazilian. Why can't people get it through their head that a Nationality is not a race and doesn't not come with a certain look?
BTW, if you're wondering, the young lady in the foto is my daughter. Her father is also Mexican.
I'm on the right for those of you who have not figured it out yet :)
I think I am as dark as Afro-Mexicans get, I have not see many but when I go to Mexico (only the southern most states have blacks) they all look very mixed and you can barely tell they are Afro descendents.
Shawty Doo Woop: Not at all, everyone can tell I am black just by looking at me, what I want is for people to not question me so much when I tell them I am Mexican. I am proud to be Afro-Mexican.
I found Nemo!: When did I ever say Brazilians spoke Spanish? I am a grown woman, do you really assume that I am that ignorant?
lady dee: That's really nice of you that you actually took the time to do a little research. I admire that :) I'm 38 and my daughter is 20 hehe she takes after her dad who is 36 but looks older than me.
Uptown girl, you might want to slow down when you are reading. Just saying because you wouldn't want to sound ignorant would you?

You appear mixed race. You do not look totally African (black). Put you next to Whoopi Goldberg and a two-year-old could spot the difference.
African-Americans are the biggest advocates for the classification of anyone with black blood or "black looks" as black ( http://bbsnews.net/article.php/20061222014017231 ). Best example is the President. Others include first best "black" actress - Halle Berry, a biracial woman. Most blacks insist on perpetuating the one-drop rule which labels any one with black bood as black. Sadly, most of society goes along with this and there are laws on the books brought about by black family "advocates" that say a biracial child (white + black) *must* be placed in a black family, no matter what their mommy or daddy is (or was). Thankfully, this attitude is changing as evidenced by the more-than-one-box-checking now allowed on census forms.
The claim by the black community that they "come in all colors" is a contradiction. The "they" means African. Africans are black-skinned people, not "high yellow", etc. The "many colors" comes from racial mixing, not "them". But, that doesn't mean all blacks are biracial, just as all races, decendants of Africans, are not black. Having a little bit of white blood is totally different than being the direct offspring of a white person.
The one drop rule is racist, scientifically flawed, and was ruled unconstitutional in 1967. A person of mixed race, like you, is just that -a mix. No matter what race they "look" like or "identify" with, a multiracial person carries 50% of genetic traits of all the races of each parent, both those that appear outwardly and those that don't. Black does NOT dominate.
Labeling a person a race on looks alone would mean Eastern Indians, Arabs and people of other races are also black. That's ludicrous. Labeling a person based on "treatment" or "experience" means anyone discriminated against or from the "hood" is black. That's ridiculous.
The continued insistance by the black community to apply a ONE race to a biracial/multiracial person of black ancestry enrages me. I'm reminded of an 8-year-old, precious biracial boy featured on the Montell Williams show who hanged himself because of racial teasing by his white brother. If this little boy, and the many more biracial people who struggle with identity issues, had been encouraged by society to embrace ALL of himself, and taught by his family the truth, that he IS all of himself and is part of ALL of his family no matter what, he may still be here with us today.
No one can pick and choose which race they are. No matter what they choose to label themselves as does not change what they are. You are multiracial. No matter what anyone tries to label you, I thank you for and encourage you to continue loving ALL of you. Classifying the direct offspring of two or more races as ONE race is advocacy for internal segregation.

Maybe because you don't look like the typical Mexican you look more like a light skin black woman. Sorry but it is true. Maybe if you said you are Afro Mexican they would believe you. Majority of Mexicans are Mestizos which are Amerindian and Spanish. Afro Mexicans are a small minority in Mexico less than 1%. Mexico had one of the smallest slave populations because Mexico was not a slave based economy and Mexico had enough man power available with all the Amerindians that lived in Mexico. The United States got about 5% of all slaves or around 450,000 to 500,000 while Mexico got only 200,000 to 250,000 or only 2.5%.
Majority of slaves went to South America. Brazil got 38% of all slaves
The Caribbean received like another large percentage around 35%
The Spanish only shipped 17% of all enslaved Africans split between 18 or more countries including the Caribbean. The Atlantic slave hub was the Caribbean so Dominican Republic or Hispaniola, Cuba and Puerto Rico were heavily populated with West Africans. Per Capita the Dominican Republic has more African ancestry then any other Hispanic country. 9 out of 10 people have African ancestry or 90% of the population like Sammy Sosa, David Ortiz, Alfonso Soriano, Vlamir Guerrero, Tony Dandrades, Zoe Saldana, Arlenis Sosa, and Sesilee Lopez. Haiti a non Hispanic country which shares a island with Dominican Republic per capita has more people of African ancestry in the Caribbean with 97% of the population having African ancestry. Cuba 65% of the people in Cuba have African ancestry and their are many Afro Cubans like Yasiel Puig, Jon Secada, Celia Cruz, and 45% of the people in Puerto Rico have African ancestry.

Wow, you're hot. You're the only person I've seen that looks cuter than their avatar lol. I'm Mexican American and I've always loved black latinas. I only wish we had a larger black population in the Mexican community. Well, it was larger at one point but many have been absorbed into the larger population. I suspect there are alot of Mexicans with some black ancestry that dont even realize it. For example, you pointed out that people have a hard time accepting you're Mexican but I doubt anyone questions your daughter's mexican heritage. Anyway, you shouldnt allow anyone to define who you are as a person. Mexicans can come in all shades from pale redheads to caramel color like you, and a mix of everything else. I dont know why that's so difficult for some people to comprehend.
I always think it's great when I see a black Mexican. Some Mexicans with black ancestry that i can think of off the top of my head, mexico's second president vicente guerrero. Mexican soccer players Giovani Dos Santos, Edoardo Isella and Melvin Brown Casados. Baseball players Ruben Amaro Jr and Sr. I just heard US born african/mexican american baseball players Scott and Jerry Hairston will be playing for team Mexico this year. I suspect rappers Taboo and Baby Bash have some black ancestry too.

You are really pretty.
I understand what you mean. When I tell some white people I'm mixed, they drop their mouths and say seriously? They think I am fully black, and vise versa with black people. I'm not dark nor light.
Most people automatically know I'm mixed but those few people I just mentioned really bother me.
It goes back to the old line "don't judge a book by it's cover"

On which side of the pic are you on?
If you're the one on the right, then you are really beautiful.
No one's really being racist. Just think about it, have you ever seen a mexican ever look like that? Or south american... I haven't. I'm not being racist. Perhaps you have some black ancestry
- Anonymous1 decade ago
ok, but which one are you?
the one in the left or the one in the right?
I mean if you are the one in the R, then you look more dominican and not mexican because its rare to see a darker mexican person that resembles more african background, but Ive seen mexicans that do have african roots.
If you are the one in the L, then you do look mexican.
ok, now that i know which one are you, well like I said before its rare to have Afican-Mexican ancestors just because history seems to show that their were more spaniards and native indian mexicans mixed than african people as the opposite of the spanish caribbean people like myself, but afro-mexican does exist.
picture of Afro-Mexican people (which is a beautiful mix):

not to be rude but you look younger than your daughter, if she is way younger, then her make up makes her look older than a natural look which Im sure she would look prettier than she already is. you look younger because you have less make up.

It's cause some people specify race to a country. If it's mexico you'd expect spanish looking people.
If a white african comes to America and says he's African American people will go what? they won't believe him bla bla

The African presence in Mexico is a very much underexposed part of history. And looking at you and your daughter, I must say a very beautiful, MUY BONITA, part of history. My goodness!! Peace.

That's your daughter? OMG you have very good genes obviously lol. Anyway, I think because of your dark skin, people might assume you are black. You actually look so much like one of my girlfriends and she's black... except for the eye colour maybe.
edit: when I mentioned 'good genes', I meant age-wise. You dont look like you could have a daughter that age.

because you are black?
A black Hispanic.
"Mexican" is a nationality. If they iincorrectly guess your nationality, Idk. Brazilians don't even speak spanish.
I didn't say YOU did!
I misread your question. Probably since I knew you couldn't honestly be looking for an actual answer. I don't know if you want me to jump into their minds-- not even their minds but AFRICAN AMERICANS minds-- or what.
