It could be a font problem, as the first person said. I would also try saving the document back a version, that is, if you have the latest Mac version, it's 2008. Your school might have Office/Word 2003. So go to the File>Save As and select Word 1997-2003 option if it's there, which will give you a file type of .doc (your file should be whatever you named the Word Document, say My_report for example, with .doc after My_report, like this: My_report.doc). That should be readable in whatever version your school computer is using.

Another way you can do this, although you may lose some formatting, is to save your file as an RTF (.rtf) file type. It stands for "Rich Text Format" and nearly all word processing programs can open that kind of file.
