R&P: What would the music world look like today without MTV?

I want everyone's thoughts, to me, I think music in the mainstream would be much more creative and artistic. To me, I think MTV kind of shoves their music down everyones throat telling society what music is "cool" and what music is "throw back cool" and so on, and so forth. On the other hand, Music videos would seem much more boring than they already were.

Well, those are my 2 cents.. how about you?

Update:

I know Mtv is mostly reality shows now, but im talking as a whole, a few years back they were really playing mainstream rap to death.

Update 2:

I think we were doing ok in the music department before MTV came along answer number 13.

No it wasn't one of the worst things to happen to the music world. Some of it's shows, especially Headbangers Ball and 120 Minutes showed the world music that until that time didn't receive a lot of airplay. If it hadn't have been for MTV, I'd have never gotten into bands like the Violent Femmes, The Sugar Cubes and The Jesus and Mary Chain because they weren't getting airplay on commercial radio. Every generation has always had it's commercial/corporate artists. Madonna is a good example of commercialized music no matter what decade it lands in. There is still good music being made out there now, one just has to dig a little to find it.

MTV was ok when it first came out but went downhill fast.We used to have a big satellite dish in the old days and I liked MuchMusic better. There was also a show called Heavy Harv that only played metal which was really good.I notice that as people get older they tend to give up the popular music(no matter what genre) and prefer quality over mainstream. This is probably why MTV just couldn't keep up.Personally i feel that a lot of videos distract you from the music.

You've just hit the tip of the iceberg, Not only music would be WAY better, But young girls wouldn't think being slutty is a normal part of every girls youth-(see every single show geared for teens on MTV, always drunk, sleeping around, no respect for themselves, ect.ect.) Every guy might actually have an independent thought, instead of-for example, Giant fake diamond studs, crooked baseball hats (The most played out fad of them all) untied Timberlands, pants falling down, and last but not least-Talking like you've never met the English language-"fur real dough", "thats how I do", "I see you at" "we might could get some henny" Please!! How and when did sounding like 6th grade dropouts become the way to talk? If MTV was taken off the air the youth of this country would be better off.

I believe it only does if you choose to watch it and participate in it.

I love MTV && VH1. Those are the only 2 stations Ill watch, aside from when Anime is on on Adult Swim. I dont really watch alot of TV, though. In the morning Ill listen to my iPod instead, just so the TV is one less thing that I have to turn off before I leave. I may watch it at night though, if I cant sleep.

I like some of the main stream stuff (AAR, Secondhand Serenade, Saving Abel), but I mostly stick with bands like 30 Seconds to Mars, Bullet For My Valentine, Escape the Fate, etc.

They only choose your music for you if you let them. And if you let them well ... your choice. Who cares if what you listen to is "cool" or "popular"? It's what you like after all (I hope?).

LOL, I got a thumbs down, thats alright (:.

MTV isnt completely reality shows. It shows music videos in the morning sometimes (Although they're normally no longer than a minute). It also shows 30 second clips during show credits.

VH1 also has a big "influence" on popular music. Their music videos are also longer than MTVs.

It would probably be the same. MTV doesn't create the music they just throw it out there and make it more popular. I hate MTV but I think without them the only thing that would slightly change would be the popularity.

ha! it doesnt matter now. since they dont even PLAY music anymore. but back when it first started i think it had a huge impact on what would go on to become popular. but as far as today, MTV is as relevant to music as giving an otter a rectal exam.

screw mtv. lets get a real video channel up and running again.

Have you been living in a cave for the past 5 years? MTV barely even plays music any more. Now it's all crappy "reality" shows. I think they stopped playing music when good music became rarer

I think music would be a lot better without MTV. I mean, there might actually be some great guitar work in rock songs again for once!

Just think about it--great guitar solos in rock and roll again...that'd be awesome!

  • MTV doesn't even play music! What kind of MTV are you watching? That channel just has a bunch of pointless shows on it.
