a dog question, if you please?

Ok, so I live with 2 female border collies, and we recently added a newfie puppy (male) to the mix...this weekend, the border collies got into a no holds barred fight....any suggestions on alleviating the tension in the house?

Why on earth are you surprised? This has been simmering for ages & the addition of another INTRUDER/COMPETITOR has triggered the BOIL-OVER.

Are you incapable of training & discipline? Then you better move one of the adults to a different home. Bitches rarely get over/get past a fight like that.

The dogs need to be constantly supervised especially with a new arrival. Slowly introduce them to the dog by having them in the same room for short periods of time. Make sure the collies are getting plenty of attention and exercise. A tired dog, is a happy dog. Make sure you are feeding the collies first, and letting them out first to help establish alpha roles. Do not tolerate any misbehaviour. Try to separate the fighting before it gets out of hand, spray water or make crashing sounds if you can not interfere. Usually thought and planning goes into doing something like bringing home a new puppy to ensure smooth transitions. I must advise you not doing this twice. I would advise you taking the puppy to obidence school because it would benefit both you and the dogs.

Have you ever watched the Dog Whisperer with Cesear? I have. And WOW...he certainly can make a difference with dogs and their owners.

Exercise is one of the main keys to keeping a dog, like border collies, and others, well managed. They need to release a lot of energy. You have two very energetic dogs, (the border collies). They need a good 45-60 minute walk every day each.

I would suggest calling Cesar from the Dog Whisperer and asking advice on this. Since you brought a new dog to the mix, he can help you to introduce this new dog in a more healthy way for all of you. :-)

I'm going to go try and find his website...brb...Ok..here it is. This is amazing. Watch the video he has and watch how he works with dogs. He's just absolutely amazing. I love watching him.

I'm sure his contact info is on there too. Hope this helps.

I hate to say it , But you should never have two females and a male. Especially if the male is the puppy. Both females think the male pup is theirs and will fight to the death over it. I had two older females and then got a male pup. Those two females fought everyday over him. I have the scars on my hands to prove it. Many times I came home and they were locked on each others necks. Fur and blood everywhere.

Make sure they are all fixed and then you have to do alot of training.

Dog-dog aggression is a very serious matter. Until your dogs are successfully treated, keep them a safe distance from each other ("safe distance" meaning the minimum amount of space they need to remain calm and unstressed).
