Airman Timothy P. Davis killed in Afghanistan ???(IED)?

What was an airman doing on the ground? I would think that the Air force would only be on a airbase in the air or on a aircraft carrier? Please someone with air force experience tell why he would be on the ground in a combat area? Something doesn't make sense here.

Well you're wrong. Airmen do convoy escort, prisoner escort, and work in Tactical Air Control Parties directing airstrikes. They also work with SOF on the ground.

(The AF doesn't work on aircraft carriers, that's the navy. Who also work with ground units, extensively.)

The Air Force has been doing more to help the combat mission on the ground in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Also the Air Force has Special Ops (Combat Controllers & Pararescue) that fight on the ground. AF Security Forces also do patrols with the Army. As to Airmen Davis I can not say.

Btw the Navy runs Aircraft Carriers.

You might want to do a little research on UNITED STATES SPECIAL OPERATION and those who have been in that area of work for years . SOCOM was establish in the 80's but the branches Air Force/Navy/Army always had special ops, but of course people don't hear much about Air Force Combat Controllers who work with SEALS, RANGERS,Green B's, and Delta Force. Recently the Marines in 05 was added to special operations, but it has always been army/air force/navy . Air Force part into special operations are ground men like CCT/PJ/TACP/Weathmen, and air crew with AC130/various other plans . A lot people don't know or even care to know just stick with what they think they know. My bestfriend is Air Force Combat Controller 12 yrs thus far. They are call Special Tactics also famous movie Black Hawk Down there was a AF COMBAT CONTROLLER and PJ along with that mission. READ BOOKS MORE THAN MOVIE HYPE.......youtube combat controllers

It was Staff Sgt. Timothy P. Davis of the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron.

He was an Air Force Combat Controller.

    IE he was spec ops.

Combat controllers call in air strikes against hostile targets and deploy with Army, Navy and Marine Spec Ops Units.

Why would airmen be on a navy aircraft carrier ?

Let me begin by telling you that you are a ******* moron. This question proves that either 1) You arent even in the military or 2) you do some paper pushing ***** staff job. Tim was one of my best friends, a great father and husband and a ******* WARRIOR. I, like Tim, am an Air Force Combat Controller. If you dont know who we are by now, you are a complete douchebag; as you have already proven. Google it you ******* peice of ****, and dont ever question the sacrifice that not only my Air Force brothers have made, but any branch for that matter you peice of trash. Who gives a **** where he was at anyway? If a sailor gets killed on a ship does that make his death any less worthwhile? For your ******* information he was fighting on the ground, this will be his SECOND Purple Heart, and SECOND Bronze Star with Valor device for bravery IN BATTLE!!! Idiot. Do the world a favor and never log on to the internet again.

Davis was 23 STS. Those guys are on the ground just like everyone else. That's not to say other airmen aren't on the ground. With no front line, anyone can get hit at any time. Airmen also serve in ILO positions for the Army, including convoy duty, etc. And of course there's CC/TACP/PJs and the security forces are on the ground with MPs, etc. The AF isn't as safe as people crack it up to be.

Service men go where they are sent. My son, Tim (land surveyor) read the lay of the land and called in fire power. I believe that is why he was on the ground. I don't have air force experience, but this is what he conveyed to me. I hope this explains why my "Timbo" was in a combat area. I taught my son that it is the easiest thing in the world to ridicule someone and tear them down. What is hard is to look for the good in people and encourage them. My son learned this adage from me. ok, just cuase we're in the Air Force, doesn't mean we all fly. there are many jobs that are ground based, and will put you in combat. I'm a 2T171, vehicle operator/dispatch NCO, and i've driven in combat convoys, also you have the Security Forces that do patrols around the bases, and venture outside the wire. you have SOF, special Operations Forces, which, well who knows what the secret squirrels are up to, also you have weather flight individuals who may end up outside the wire, civil engineers rebuild everything, not just the bases, and you'll have humanitarian missions that take food and supplies to needy folks outside the wire. these are just what i can think of off the top of my head.

Timothy P Davis was my nephew and he was a Combat Controller. I am disappointed in the other Combat Controller's response. I had Tim explain his role in the Air Force and I did learn what he did. You do not have to treat people badly if they do not know EVERYTHING. Tim would be disappointed in your behavior. Tim would of taught you and not belittled you. Shame on you. M
