Why won't companies hire the developmentally disabled adults?
I am a 46 year old female. I am disabled, my disability is a hidden disability - Autism Spectrum Disorder. I work at what they would call a sheltered workshop for the handicapped. I want a job out in the community but it doesn't seem like companies want to hire the developmentally disabled. Why ??? We want to work !!!

Supported Employment is an option for individuals with disabilities to work in competitive employment in an integrated (i.e., not sheltered) setting. Employment specialists and Job developers locate jobs and companies willing to work with the individuals thru the Supported Employment agency.
Job coaches within the agency use the place-train approach (train the individual at the worksite) and fade in and out as warranted. Depending on the size of your location (city, town), a SE agency may be available. They work with employers (and have employment incentives such as tax breaks - Work Opportunity Tax Credit being one) to hire individuals with disabilities.
There are myths surrounding the employment risks that have been dispelled by such as the DuPont study that show that individuals with disabilities do not pose a higher safety or attendance risk than their non-disabled counterparts.
The economy has a lot to do with the success of these programs as does the attitudes and awareness of society about capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

Molly M, take a personality test and tell us that autistic can pass that 100 questions without getting a rejection notice.
If I don't have the answer or reading before taking a personality test, what good is it for people who have a hard time comprehending what it is being said?
That same goes for scenario where employee act out and you minding your own business. Should you A. Go to the Supervisor. B. Go on with your work? Figured that question out, it a multiple choice question that would be useless in reality.
Walmart hired disabled people? What world do you live in? Walmart is a biggest enemy in United States.

That same goes for the rest of the companies that is on the list. Unemployment... my butt, corporate not willing to provide workforce for people looking for jobs.

Khafi has the right answer!
There are different types of jobs for developmentally disabled people to perform. Seeing a job coach would help. It's a free service for disabled people who aren't currently working. They tend to be in larger cities - so check around.
I work now, and am teetering on the brink of unemployment. If I do become unemployed, I will definitely use that resource to help me through!

This is what I found out and, some friends found out the same thing. I went job hunting, put in over 150 applications around the county. I have three years of college, I formed my own company in construction and am a Master carpenter.
I never got a single call in a year. Then I started thinking , along with a couple of disabled friends that were looking also. I'm going to start lying about my disabilities, not say anything about them. I hung up my cane and tried to walk as straight as possible, I lied on the apps. and you guessed it, within a month I got so many calls I couldn't keep up.
Now, tell me people want to help the disabled.

I know your pain and it's prejudice like this that causes me and others to apply for SSI. I DON'T WANT IT BUT I NEED IT. Unfortunately if you are on the high functioning end and get SSI or SSDI you receive discrimination from within the community.
I understand why the really severely disabled are not hired in the mainstream but a lot of the mild to sort of moderate miss out a lot. They have assumption that we are slow, not that smart, etc.
I have a college certificate and I still can't get a decent job.

The reason is liability. If a developmentally challenged person were to accidentally or intentionally hurt somebody or fail to take the proper precautions when performing an action that results in someone getting hurt or killed. The company could potentially be looking at some pricey lawsuits. These things can and do happen with "regular" people too, but the chances of an occurrence like that happen rises exponentially when you have someone with limited mental facilities performing the same actions.

I think it really depends on the severity of your Autism. I'm 16 and Autistic, and I don't have any trouble finding a job. Maybe it's about your appearance or the way you interact with people...I don't know. :/

Technically my dear, if you watch some people with Disabilities, they accidentally break expensive merchandise that a person on SSI or SSD would not be able to afford to pay back to the company for their losses.
