What is a pastor (as used regularly in R/S) ?

Is it just an American word for priest ? Does it apply to a particular branch of christianity ?

It's all vicars, ministers and priests round here.

A "priest" is a mediator between God and other men. Since the resurrection of Jesus Christ, this type of position has been done away forever, and replaced with the risen Savior, Jesus Christ. See Heb. 7 for details.

The word "pastor" is used in Jeremiah and Ephesians 4. It literally means someone who feeds the sheep. More common titles used are "Bishop" (1 Tim. 3) and "Elder" (Titus 1). And else is often just an older, more experienced person. But when used as a position, it is interchangeable with Bishop. Bishop means "overseer."

The Bishop or Pastor is just the person responsible to oversee the affairs of the local assembly and make sure the group is staying on spiritual track (1 Tim. 3:15). They must answer for their role in how they guide the assembly, but God does not recognize them as a spiritual mediator (1 Tim. 2:5), nor to they have any power to affect the spiritual condition of any other believer.
