Position the crank on TDC for #1 cylinder.

Look at the distributor assembly with the cap off. On the base, there are 2 marks in a small triangle, each about 45 degrees from each other; one is a "6" and the other is a "8". When properly installed in the 4.3 engine, the distributor rotor will be pointing at the "6" when the crank is at TDC for #1 cylinder. If it does not, remove the distributor and clock it until the rotor points to the "6" with the distributor fully seated.

pointing at no.1 cylinder, with the # 1 cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke, line up mark on crankshaft to 0,position of rotor button should be pointed at # 1 plug wire on dist. cap on comp. stroke or # 4 on intake stroke dist. will only go in 2 positions if your oil pump shaft didnt get turned. if dist is 180 out the motor may backfire if it does remove dist turn the dist shaft 180 put it back in.if not line up timing marks to see where the rotor button is pointing ,but make sure its on the compression stroke not the intake or exhaust stroke you can find the comp stroke by removing #1 plug and turning the motor over by hand until you feel air coming out this may require 2 people when the t-mark on crank lines up 0 stop this should be # 1 comp stroke.
