Can my son go to Mexico from the U.S. with just a passport?

And, stay for an indefinite amount of time with his father who is a Mexican citizen. Possibly 6 months to a year, and start kindergarten there? If not what does he need? My husband said someone at the Mexican consulate said just to get him Mexican documents to travel on, so I told him he must have misunderstood or someone was smoking too much something?

What documents do I need to do for my son to stay and go to school in mexico for about a year?

Update:

Michele, yes I know I'm not making my decisions based on answers I get here. I'm only looking for input. Every little bit might help. But thank you for looking out for my son.

He is both a US and Mexican citizen. A US Citizen because he was born here (and if you are a US Citizen that's another reason), a Mexican citizen because of his father's citizenship.

Mexico does not require a passport from him, the US in theory does require him to have one if leaving the country, but not at that border at this time. So he can go but eventually he must have a US Passport to return. If he's going to go he needs to have one so get him one if you approve of this plan, in that way he is documented as a US Citizen and in compliance with US law now and in the future. With it he can return witout problems.

As a Mexican citizen he needs no documents from MExico in order to go to school there or live there, except a birth certificate..

I approve of his doing that; he should have access to his heritage from both nations.

Get him a Mexican passport. As the son of a Mexican citizen he is entitled to Mexican nationality.

Do not take advice for this question from people on this webpage!

This is a critical issue and a small child is involved.

You MUST contact Immigration Naturalization/US Border Patrol and get the facts from them. Do not trust any other source with something as important as your child.
