Hmm, I think this has to do with the age of the person talking more than anything. I'd fall over faster than a fainting goat if anyone under the age of 30 used the word "housecoat."

A bathrobe is generally used for drying off after a shower or bath under which you wear nothing, and is usually made of some type of terry cloth, like a big towel that you can wear.

A housecoat is something that can be worn all day long in case you don't want to put regular clothes on, or if you have to answer the door in your PJ's, or less. A housecoat is a cover-up, and can be used to keep you warm when it is too cold.

However, quite often, people use both terms interchangeably. Though it is incorrect.

In my humble opinion, a bathrobe is a robe, wraps the body and is secured by a tied belt, that is made of absorbant material and worn before and/or after bathing. A housecoat zips up, is worn around the house as a coverup (to protect modesty if underdressed or clothing while doing housework), and seems old fashioned. A dressing gown is a robe, wraps the body and is secured by a tied belt, which is made of thin/slinky material, likely unabsorbant, often accompanying matching lingerie, worn over nightwear or during a lull in the changing process (i.e. while getting makeup done for a wedding or waiting for an outfit to be brought).

I've never heard of a housecoat before but I would assume it's a light jacket you would wear indoors, most likely hip length.

A bathrobe has a simple tie at the waist, is very loose and usually calf length. The two also have different materials. Kind of like what's the difference between a bikini top and a bra.

  • a housecoat is wore over your nightgown & a bathrobe is thicker & made from things like terry cloth or cotton like a bath towel. A bathrobe is made for using after a shower & a housecoat is just a cover up.

great question madhavi:) yOU know though these words sound synonimous but still there lies a "deep" difference !! Happiness can be found of things which may not even be beneficial to our spiritual or psychological aspect like we may go out & have our favourite dish & clothes etc., we would feel happy. But satisfaction comes from a kind of achievent, if we get good grades in studies we would get a positive feeling that says "hard word paid off" now thats more beneficial isn't it ;p[ Now peace.... I think it depends on what attitude we adopt towads the "activities" we do for "happiness" or either "satisfaction", peace actually exist in our self, it just has to be found by us. A person of ignorance might feel peace while a hard worker could be strresed. It can be even oposite to that . So peace needs to found by us.
