Could this Caretakers job possibly be 'the best job in the world'?

34,000 people applied for this position!

What made so many people apply? Well the job is taking care of an Australian island, the job pays 150,000 Australian dollars for a six month stint and includes free air fares from the applicant's home country back to the island.

It was absolutely nothing to do with the job and absolutely everything to do with a fantastic PR idea by Australian Tourism.

Hats off to 'em - reports of this 'job vacancy' were run on news channels in just about every country in the western world, along with beautiful aerial footage of the stunning Hamilton Island.

I'm not saying the job doesn't exist - I'm sure it does - but that wasn't the aim of the campaign.

Wish it had been my idea!

Six months isn't long...it's been four and half months since Christmas...where's that gone? Why shouldn't they be thinking realistically? It's fine, all that money and no supermarkets or pubs to go wild with it in. Just the job,as they say. Would suit me a treat....There are no uninteresting things, only uninterested people. I could soon fill the days on that kind of place...loads to do,loads to find out,and loads to be interested in.....Why would so many students apply? They're not uninteresting couch potatoes with nothing more than what's on telly to fill their heads, that's why.....good for them. ...If that seems strange, then I'm sorry to critisize but yes, you're missing something.....the joy of living.

It may well be on an Island paradise but I am pretty sure it will be bloody hard work, you may have noticed it is for 6 months and I suppose there will be another person doing the other six months so the first person gets a rest.

Didn't you see the supposed video application from Osama Bin Laden?

Someone had sent in a video of him with subtitles saying that he was good at organising big events, and liked sand. It was very funny, but rejected for some mysterious reason.

It is too good to be true. The catch is that the successful applicant will end up having to sell their soul to Ozzie Rules football, agree to have an Ozzie accent for the rest of their natural life and constantly refer to "barbies".

And worst is - They will probably have to drink XXXX beer.

And look like they are enjoying it.
