Experienced knitters....help needed please?

A friend of mine has reached a point on a knitting pattern that she doesn't understand and so I wondered if anyone here could help?

What does "12 sts from 11 cast on at lower edge" mean?

Update:

Thanks to Maria for your answer....I noticed that 'chazza23' asked the question there as well which I didn't know before asking it here lol. and she has got a detailed response to it on the link you posted!

You are picking up 12 stitches from the 11 at the cast on edge. This is part of a more detailed set of instructions. See

    About.com/knitting or www.knittinghelp.com.

    Hope this helps.
