10 weeks pregnant smoked 1 cigarette?

i'm currently 10 weeks pregnant. i do not smoke however i have a really good friend who just found she was also 10 weeks pregnant. she found out today. yesterday she smoked 1 cigarette and maybe only smoke 2-5 the last 10 weeks. she is very worried that something is going to be wrong with the baby. she has quit for good. i tell her that everything will be ok but she does not believe me can anyone give me advice to tell her. she was never a heavy smoker. a pack would last her a month and she does not do any drugs either. nor does she drink.

Well the first 10 weeks are crucial for the baby's development.

But then again millions of pregnant women used to smoke while pregnant before the health warning came out years ago.

My mom in law smoked packs and packs a days in the 60's while she was pregnant w/ my husband, and he's perfectly normal.

As long as she stays away from them for the rest of the pregnancy, i think everything should be fine.

I'm also 4 weeks prego too and yes it can still harm your baby it can cause many birth defects and it could cause them to be born a preemie and very small cause when you smoke you are actually suffocating your baby i know this cuz i too am a smoker i smoked with both my kids my daughter who is now 5 weighed in at 5 12 19 in and my son was a month early with many health problems including needing heart surgery weighed 4 6 17 in so i hope that helps clear this up for you just don't do it your better off and so is your baby congrats Kari

Although I don't recommend smoking while pregnant my sister smoked with all 3 of hers (not heavily but enough) and they were healthy kids. My nephew even got a 10 apgar score! I will say though they have had more ear infections and been ill a lot more than my daughter ever was! She'll be fine as long as she quit smoking early

  • Good for her that she stopped as soon as she found out!

Same thing happened to me. I was a heavy smoker (1 pack day). I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was about 6 weeks along. The day I found out I was preggers was the day I stopped smoking. It's been 1 year, 2 months and 5 days.

My son is now 6 months old and is happy and healthy!

Tell your friend not to worry.. because worrying too much leads to stress that could be more damaging to the little baby. She did good by stopping when she found out... and I don't think 5 ciggs will do anything.. I mean.. if you think about it.. i had about 840 ciggs before I stopped.

People say smoking causes prematurity in babies, low birth weight, lung problems, this that and the other, but its not always the case. Personally i think whatever happens during pregnancy is going to happen weather the mother smokes or not. A lot of baby's are born premature when their mothers never smoked. Its genetics and how the mothers body handles being pregnant and how the baby handles its development during the pregnancy. Your friend and her baby will be perfectly fine. A lot of moms smoke during pregnancy and have very healthy baby's with a good weight like my nan did. She smoked a lot and had a 10 pound baby!! None of her baby's were underweight or any health problems and she had 11 kids.

    Her baby's fine =]

She's still very early in the pregnancy so smoking that little probably didn't affect it all. I just went in for a check up yesterday and asked about smoking, and my dr told me that while quitting completely is strongly suggested, 5 or less a day significantly reduces health risks to baby. But it's always best to quit completely...congrats to your friend and you!

  • As long as she doesn't smoke anymore, her baby will be fine. I smoked before I found out I was pregnat at 11 weeks. It is so early in the pregnancy that the baby should be fine.

she'll be fine. i smoked, drank, and more before i found out i was 12 weeks pregnant. both of my boys were huge, healthy, & beautiful.

Today they are 11 & 9 and they are so healthy and smart. don't know if its genetics, breastfeeding or what.

Tell her not to wory so much!

Smoking that little shouldn't hurt the baby. But she should stop asap. Smoking throughout a pregnancy can result in low birth weight(4-6 lb babies. very unhealthy), premie babies(baby being born waaay before time), or lung problems in the infant.
