How Come People Do Not Put Break Away Collars On Their Cat ?

My neighbor moved out of state and left 6 cats. I have taken in 3 of them and had them neutered and spayed. There was 3 left outside that would not come to me. Have been working on it for months. I noticed that one of the cats had a collar on her and it was very tight. She appeared pregnant which means the collar would be getting embedded soon. I called animal control and told them the problem. They brought out a cage. Did not work. Another call got me another broken cage. I finally drove in and to my amazement they had no other working cages. They just poured one million dollars into this animal shelter but had no working cages. Can't not believe it.

Drove to the store and bought my own. Came home, set it up and it took 5 minutes for the sweet heart to take the chicken bate and get trapped. My husband and I took her into the bathroom, closed the door and let her out. She was not a happy camper. With gloves we picked her up and Ben cut off her collar.

She had been trying to loose the collar for a month. The collar was the size you place on a kitten. She was lucky. Cats choose the owners. This is not the first time I have seen this. People need to put break away collars on their animals.

She is in our closet and I am just going to let her calm down. She will come out when we are ready. Now all I have to catch is the male black cat I have named Popcorn after the cat I had growing up. There is a Calico cat about 6 months old. It should not take long I hope to catch the Calico cat. Hope she is not pregnant. Relieved In Texas. Collar is off. It was almost imbedded.

Update:

I am a vet. A lot of people know about break away collars. If you are going to have an outside cat then please place a break away collar on the cat. And yes people never cease to amaze me.

Ouch, I don't know why they didn't Both of my pets collars if pulled too tight comes off (for the cats) we check all of them regularly but have recently taken them all off as we don't "own" them, they "own" us. xD

Many cats simply don't like wearing a collar. For identification purposes, have a microchip ID implanted under the skin of your cat. Most shelters, vets, and pounds will scan for a chip in a stray or lost cat who they catch. If they find a chip, the scanner will display the unique number and they can use it to get in touch with the owner. A microchip ID can't be lost as can a collar.

Your neighbors obviously were not responsible owners. Leaving cats to fend for themselves after moving out.

A lot of people do not know about break away collars. I guess they just assume the collar is safe since it is made for cats. Which is how it should be.

It is a good thing you got the collar off her. If you wnat to be sure she is not pregnant you can take her to the vet.

Because irresponsible cat owners don't imagine bad possiblities our cats are neutered and have NO collars but don't come to anyone but me when they are outside and good luck with those cats!

Most responsible pet owners DO put break-away collars on their cats. Considering they were abandoned, are you really surprised that the owner wasn't also considerate enough to use the appropriate collars?
