Any advice for a guy who is about to start playing as an adult at 8th man?

I have played soccer and American football for years.

    number 8 is a hard runner, big tackler. Normally, number 8's have a bit of size about them, so I'm going to assume you have a bit of size about you too, throw it around!

    With the ball in hand, run strait & hard, try to pick out the opposition's #9 & #10's to run at.

    In defence, drop your shoulder & make your presence known.
