Why is Obama comparing himself to Lincoln?
Abraham Lincoln was Republican, a great President and leader. The only similarity I see is that they are both extremely ugly but knew how to work a crowd. Am I missing something?
volleyballchick: You are wrong, the parties have moved extremely far in the left direction to where modern day Republicans would be best compared to Democrats of Lincoln's day while modern day Democrats would be best compared to communists of Lincoln's era. or have you not noticed that the Constitution of the U.S. has continually got more open minded and less about protecting liberties?
Dropshortandduck: No, I expect him to be honest at least, which he is obviously not so therefore obviously not Lincoln-like. I'd vote for Jonathan Krohn for President before I voted for Obama's 2nd term.
moo goo gai pan: Obama better not be set up for 3 terms. I hope America remembers how that turned out last time. That President accomplished as much as an ER doctor treating gunshot wounds with band-aids.

It is like the Wizard of OZ...Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
If he tells you he is like Lincoln and Reagan and whoever, he wants you to think that is what he is. So you will be less likely to see what he really is.

Well you must always remember Obama is only repeating what someone else wrote and is only the story teller and never the story writer, It would seem they picked a famous President like Lincoln with great achievements and who was admired and loved by all but also one that no one alive today had ever really seen or heard to compare the fraud Obama to, but lately they have been comparing him to FDR because they are trying to set a mindset of the possibility of Obama being President for more than 2 terms//That's right sports fans it's all about control and mind setting something the dem's would love to have a hold on///man never forget they are liberals and are trying to change our country to their socialist agenda and that's not what the founders started this for and not what many have and still are fighting for// Obama and his gang must go they are bad and they are wrong////

Well, he's been compared to Lincoln, FDR, JFK and now Reagan, too. I don't know that it is he himself doing it, (although if you remember the media made a big deal of his being sworn in using the same bible as Lincoln, was that his choice?) but whoever is making these comparisons obviously thinks the American public is too stupid or misinformed to know anything about these former presidents.

You're not that bright.
The Republican party was the liberal party in those days. Democrats were conservatives. Not the same parties as today.
Secondly, both took over a country that's divided and in peril. Lincoln's challenge was political and militarily, and Obama's challenge is economical.

1. I have never heard President Obama "compare" himself to President Lincoln - I see him merely use Lincoln's ideas in the modern world.
2. The Republican party of Lincoln's time is now called the Democratic party. The Republican party of now would have in NO WAY thought slavery wrong if it meant benefit for "big business".
addition: Oh, I'm sorry. . . did I not state that the source of my comments are from my husband - THE HISTORY PROFESSOR?? Yours is opinion - mine is right from some book in his library.
addition: And if you really knew your history, you would know that communism wasn't around until the 1900's - so THERE WAS NO COMMUNISM IN LINCOLN'S TIME, GENIUS. The countries we now see as communist were either democracies or monarchies in Lincoln's time. None of the overthrows happened until the 1900's.
Lesson here - don't try to throw down with someone that does really know history. Sorry - if I don't know the answer, I find it out. I don't speculate.
addition: Thank you Adam - another that listened in history class. Hopefully the Time's man of the year (at least this one) stays in school. . .

Obama's hero is Lincoln.
He has not COMPARED himself to Lincoln.
He aspires to Lincoln's greatness and has been
inspired by him.
Why must "we" adopt the media tactic of slanting fact to make our points?
You don't like Obama. .I'm certain there are plenty of factual things about his politics that you could critique and slam.
Making an "issue" out of nothing - aren't you all better than that?
Why not take the high road folks?

Lincoln is spinning in the grave at the comparison. Obama and Lincoln are both from Illinois. That is where the similarities end.

Give me one example of Obama comparing himself to Lincoln.
He doesn't. Lincoln is one of his inspirations, and others compare him to Lincoln. But, you will not be able to find a single incident in which Obama compares himself to Lincoln.

The Republican Party of Lincoln's time is dead. It no longer exists. Trying to associate Lincoln with today's Republican Party is just a lie. Lincoln wouldn't recognize those people.
As for Obama: he's not comparing himself to Lincoln. He's trying to draw inspiration from Lincoln. Presidents do it all the time.
Edit: Communist parties in the 1860s? Seriously?
