When God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, did he mean?
A a triune nature, with the three parts referred to in the Bible as the Father, the Word or the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Since God has created human beings in His image, we are led to expect that humans have been created as triune beings also, with three parts, referred to in the Bible as spirit, soul, and body.
Body- dust form the ground
Spirit- God breathed, the breath of life
Soul- and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being (soul).
Matthew 10:28
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell
The soul and the body must be separate as you can kill the body and the soul an stay alive.
Your thoughts please, I have been researching this and want more input. Thanks!
soul can stay alive.
Spelling error
The words spirit, soul, and body are translated from the three original New Testament Greek words: pneuma, psuche, and soma, respectively. In the original Hebrew language of the Old Testament the same three words are ruach, nephesh and geshem, respectively. Both the new and the old Testament, gave rise that each was different, insomuch as to give each a different word.
"For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Heb 4:12).
Here in Hebrews the Soul and the Spirit are seperated.
Job 27:3 All the while my breath [is] in me, and the spirit of God [is] in my nostrils;
Isa 57:16 For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls [which] I have made.

We are made in His image means that we know right from wrong. This is the concept of Trinity.
I believe that there is but one living and true God ( Deut 64, Is 45:5-7, 1 Cor 8:4 ), an infinite, all-knowing Spirit ( Jn 4:24 ), perfect in all His attributes, one in essence, eternally existing in three Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ( Mt 28:19, 2 Co 13:14 ) - each equally deserving worship and obedience.

I have heard this before and it works. The words in the Hebrew and the subject are of a simple meaning.
Image is "reflection". Reflection would be used as if we were standing in front of a mirror and therein the mirror is our image.
Humans are a dim, two dimensional image of God Almighty Elohim.
Humans/create - The verse is about the physical creation of humans.
Humans have a semblance to the Creator
Humans have the breathe of life - nephesh.
Christians have the Holy spirit within - ru'ach.
The Spirit of Life comes frome the same source as the Holy Spirit. Jesus is also a life giving Spirit. All of these are from the same Source or Principle (LOGOS)
God makes it rain on the good and bad. God gives life giving spirit (nephesh) to all creatures. God is revealed through Jesus and those who believe also have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
The "adversary" tempted Eve with knowlege of good and evil.
It is obvious that the liar knew Eve had many questions about things. He created a sense of lack by saying these words. The explicit message is that this is hidden from you and you can know things like the angels know.

Until something substantial and reputable comes along that says otherwise, I'm sticking with the fact that the word "soul" corresponds to the words "life" or "breath". It has been demonstrated numerous times throughout the Bible, even in Jesus' case, that even though people die, the life that is in them can be restored. It doesn't matter the manner in which they die- God can resurrect them. I believe this is what Jesus meant in Matthew 10:28. It's not that the soul is alive in the sense that it is self- sustaining- it's just that it belongs to God and therefore cannot be destroyed by man.
Eze 18:4 Behold, all souls5315 are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
H5315
נפשׁ
nephesh
neh'-fesh
From H5314; properly a breathing creature, that is, animal or (abstractly) vitality; used very widely in a literal, accommodated or figurative sense (bodily or mental): - any, appetite, beast, body, breath, creature, X dead (-ly), desire, X [dis-] contented, X fish, ghost, + greedy, he, heart (-y), (hath, X jeopardy of) life (X in jeopardy), lust, man, me, mind, mortality, one, own, person, pleasure, (her-, him-, my-, thy-) self, them (your) -selves, + slay, soul, + tablet, they, thing, (X she) will, X would have it.
Compare to Gen 9:5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life5315 of man.
The same Hebrew word is there, as in many, many other verses which translate as "life" or "soul" or "breath". The power to grant life to dust belongs to God, and when that life is snuffed out of the body, that power goes back to God.
Looking at Genesis 2:7, I don't know why you differentiate "spirit" and "soul" when the word used there can mean both, but in this case is more directly related to the "breath" definition given to the Hebrew word above.
Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath5397 of life; and man became a living soul.
H5397
נשׁמה
neshâmâh
nesh-aw-maw'
From H5395; a puff, that is, wind, angry or vital breath, divine inspiration, intellect or (concretely) an animal: - blast, (that) breath (-eth), inspiration, soul, spirit.
There is no indication of and no reason to conclude that "soul" and "spirit" are separate parts of human creation. The Biblical account of human creation itself doesn't indicate such. Why try to add extra meaning where there is none? Just go with what is written! ;)
Edit- I didn't catch it at first, but you're basically taking two words in Genesis 2:7 and giving them different meanings. You're saying that the act of God breathing is "spirit", and that His breath is the "soul". How is it that the act of God breathing becomes a component of human life? That's like saying that a wrench you used to put a car together is a part of that car. I don't get it...
Here is the Strong's definition for the word "breathed" in Genesis 2:7;
H5301
נפח
nâphach
naw-fakh'
A primitive root; to puff, in various applications (literally, to inflate, blow hard, scatter, kindle, expire; figuratively, to disesteem): - blow, breath, give up, cause to lose [life], seething, snuff.
Nothing here indicates "spirit".

Again if the bible translators would be honest in their translations there would hardly be one person asking this question, because the answer lies in the Hebrew word Elohim. This word is repeatedly translated God (singular)when it is in fact (plural)God's anyone knowing Hebrew will verify that the letters Im at the end of a word in the language of scripture signals us to know that this word is plural such as the words Nethenim a group of people that followed Israel out of Egypt just check it out.It is because of people being taught that there is one God and not being able to explain One( Echad in Hebrew) and yet that is just exactly what it is, a plurality. And yet it is just that thus repeatedly it is plural .Elohim is( the let us ) the Gods that created the heavens and the earth ...The Father the Son and the Ru-ah Ha Kodesh the Holy Spirit.

This can be very true That God made ourselves in His shape due to the following reasons in my view. Firstly,Ourselves should make in ourselves so that the population on universe can go ahead. This is also true that we are carrying on our duty as desired by God. Now how working of breathing is going on and this is true soul(hidden) is only responsible for our life. If the soul is out we cannot live and body is useless. The soul is immortal as it cannot be broken in to the pieces nor dry by air,and not destroy by fire etc.Thereby, soul can not be killed as stated in the question. Most of the stated matter about the posed question seem to alright.

I don't really understand what your question is. What you have said is correct. We are body soul, and spirit. The body is dust from the ground, your spirit is what God breathed in us, and it is how we communicate with God. and your soul is your life. So if someone kills you, they are only killing the body, same thing if you just die. The body is what dies. Your soul and your spirit go back to the father in Heaven,

God is triune. He is
1) God, the Father
2) God, the Son
3) God, the Holy Spirit
All three of these are different and entire unto themselves, but collectively they make up the God-head.
Man, like God, is Triune: He is:
1) Body (flesh & blood
2) Soul (that essence of life that never dies but returns to God
3)Spirit (The "breath of life that God breathed into us)
The best comparison I can make is to look at the make up of an egg. It is Triune,(3 parts)
1)Shell - (external portion
2) Yolk -
3) White (albumin)
The egg is consists of all three parts, but it is collectively, an egg.
The shell is a vital part of the egg and serves a purpose, but it doesn't do what the yolk or egg-white does.
The yolk is a vital part of the egg, and serves a purpose, but it doesn't do what the shell or egg-white does.
The egg-white is a vital part of the egg, but it's purpose is different from that of the shell or yolk.
All three parts of the egg are distinct and different, but it takes all them, collectively together to be an egg.Does that explanation help? I hope so!

Good question!!
Our is uniplural; like the royal "we."
Genesis 1:27 says, So God created man in HIS OWN image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.
*Added* I have have a spirit, soul & body but I am not 3 persons.

God is a Trinity. And in the beginning man was made in the image of Elohim (God the Father, Word & Holy Spirit) a spirit, soul & body.
With sin, came spiritual death (denied the Tree of Life), then physical death and God puts the soul where God puts the soul.
So we inherit the sin nature, tendency to rebel against Gods love & word. And when we sin, then we get hardened heart or hardened conscience. And so we are spiritually dead or blind in our trespasses & sins.
So God was sad that our sins separated us from Him. So He sent His Only Begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
So when we realize we have sinned and are missing out on knowing who God Is, etc. We turn to Jesus and confess Jesus our Lord & Savior while believing He died on the cross for remission of our sins & raised from the dead for our justification. That He overcame the curse of sin & death for us.
So then we are made whole again; spirit, soul & body. No longer dead or blind spiritually in our trespasses & sins.
But our hearts are reconnected with the heart of God!
Gods Word is able to discern between the spirit & the soul of a person.
Just picture our soul (mental reasoning) sitting. To the right is our new born spirit & to our left is our flesh. The devil tempts our flesh to do something destructive. The Spirit talks to our spirit (heart) and gives us a scripture. The voice of the flesh seems to speak louder than the voice to our heart. Until we meditate on His Word & then the voice leading our heart is louder than the lust of the flesh. It is our soul who makes the mental reasoning of who to listen to. To listen to the still quiet voice of the Holy Spirit talking to our spirit, or to listen to the temption that is speaking to our flesh.
Submit to God, resist the devil & the devil runs away. The most important is to submit to God & let the leading of the Holy Spirit be louder than the destructive temptations of the flesh.
St. Paul said that to be absent from this body (body dies & is buried) is to be present with the Lord (our spiritual soul is present with the Lord).
Because once born of Gods Spirit, we are born a spiritual soul. No longer a soul with a dead spirit or hardened conscience.

He was talking about a spiritual being that also has a human form. There are various forms on earth and in the heavenly bodies. Like the reptilian forms of the enemies of God. They are not human form. Spiritually we are able to send and receive spiritual messages....
