How do I convert video clips into DVD format?

I downloaded some episodes of a tv show and I want to put them on DVD and watch them on my tv. They are Media Player format video clips. I have spent the last week downloading and installing various programs and trying to convert these files to "DVD" format, VOB files, you name it. Nothing seems to be working. I can't figure out how to get these shows from this format onto the DVD. At one point I got them converted to VOB files, but the file size was smaller...is this normal? And if so, why didn't the DVD work after I burned it? I need someone to spell this out for me step-by-step because I just can't figure it out. HELP!!

Really, the best solution is to buy an old xbox and connect it to your tv or a current cheap dvd player (about $Au50) that will play divx and mpeg4. This will save you a lot of trouble and better quality than "converting" to dvd. Avi is compressed to approx. 700 meg from approx.4 gig! You can't get software that will put it back to it's original condition. It's like squeezing a jelly fish and then trying to put the pieces back in.
