Why Do We Really Watch Pro Wrestling: Storylines Or The Actual Wrestling?
NOTE: YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THE ENTIRE QUESTION, YOU CAN JUST ANSWER IF YOU WANT.
For a long time, Pro Wrestling has been full of good athletes. Right now in the WWE at least, they are called sports entertainers because quite frankly, that is what they are.
Acting in movies and TV shows involve scripts, and sometimes choreography. So of course you can relate the WWE and TNA wrestling to that of a movie or TV show right?
But before there was not so much acting than there was just wrestling. Of course it is all choreographed, but there was not much acting other than that. Now there is tons more acting than ever before.
We have "segments" now in the wrestling world. Or "promos", even backstage talking. All acting and scripted. But we are supposed to be watching for the wrestling part right? Or maybe not.
See more fans started wanting to see wrestling a lot more when the wrestlers began to talk. They would try and make a guy a heel or face in a match, but if the guy never spoke then it was harder to make him one or the other.
Sure he may do a few heel things in the ring, but it was not to much of an impact. However once a guy starts talking then he becomes available for criticism even more. And that is a good thing because it helps generate heat or love for that particular wrestler.
And how did it start? All from interviews with wrestlers after matches. People actually thought at one time wrestling was all real. Sure the moves and stuff is real, but other than that, nothing is.
Reporters just like in football, baseball, or other sports would interview a wrestler. And then they would proceed to talk to them. And newspapers would write what they said of course.
People would read the papers and then they would see what the wrestler said, and if he said something nice or hateful it would determine how the promotions knew whether they were a face or heel.
Basically before there was no bad or good guys in the wrestling world. Then when people started interviewing we proceeded to see this.
Some even cherish wrestling so much, that they would show up for that. But others wouldn't, until the talking started. When the interviews happened there was not script, so what they said was real.
If they said something nice or hateful, they really meant it more often than not. Promotions realized this, and decided to start scripting them, and then making a story out of it.
It would be like watching a TV show live. Then of course when the NWA, WWF, and WCW arrived on TV we saw more of this. But people used to only be able to see wrestling live.
Wrestling may be the foundation of pro wrestling, but acting is what keeps it going. Sure you could say you like watching just the wrestling part, but others watch only for what will happen storyline wise.
It is not that they don't like wrestling, just that they prefer the fact that the storyline is better. You always want to see someone run in a match and hit someone with a chair or something.
You may want to see gimmick matches, and other things too. But the fact is that none of it would be where it is today without acting. The storylines make wrestling what it is.
If we never had a face or heel, most of us would not watch. We could just find out who wins in the paper, internet, radio, or TV. There wouldn't be anything to watch for really.
I personally like wrestling, so I would watch regardless. But most do not of course. Women especially are ones who watch not because of the men, but for the story involved.
Now I am not saying that all women are like that, but more often than not, this is true. I have talked to many women about pro-wrestling. All of them talk about what they think will happen in the storyline. Not anything involving the match.
Quite frankly Y!A here wouldn't put wrestling on here if people were not interested in talking about wrestling. But if you read any Question here, most of the time in the wrestling section, it will be storyline related.
Some non-wrestling fans are ones who have either never seen it, or think it is all gay men in the ring. Yet I'm sure if they watch RAW or SmackDown, I'm sure they would get into it.
Some relate wrestling to a soap opera, and I can agree with that. But why is that do you think? The fact is that it is because of storylines.
The point I am making here is quite easily this, acting is what keeps wrestling around. Without it, pro-wrestling promotions like the WWE and TNA would not be around.
Maybe it is just me, but I feel we watch more for a great storyline than for a great match in today's pro wrestling. Do you agree?

It's Obviously the Storylines.
Because there's VERY little "Wrestling" Anymore.
During a 2 Hour Broadcast of RAW or SD! , You're Only Getting about 45 (If that) Minutes of Actual In-Ring Match Time.
The Other Hour & 15 Minutes is Commercials , Promos , & Replays of Promos and Events that Transpired 2 , 3 Weeks Ago.
And Even During the Matches , You Barely get any Chain Wrestling or Catchus Catchcan Wrestling Anymore.
A Typical Match these Days is:
Collar & Elbow Tie Up - Back to a Corner - Break - Punch - Kick - Maybe a Suplex - Rest Hold - *Cut to Commercial* - The Other Performer has the Advantage - Spot - Reversed Finisher - Finisher - Dusty Finish.
You'll Hardly EVER See a Clean Finish in Wrestling Anymore.
Wrestling is , as per the Name these Days - "Sports Entertainment".
It has Very little to do with actual Sport (Albeit the Performers are THE Greatest Athletes on the Planet) Anymore , But Mostly Cutting a Promo to Sell a PPV & Make the Promoter Money.
It USED to be - Wrestling set up a Casual Promo every Now & Again.
NOW it's - Promos Set up a Casual Match every Now & Then.
So , It HAS to be Storylines We Watch for , because there Sure as Hell Ain't Very Much Wrestling going On.
Besides , Wrestling Storylines are Better than Most Regular TV Show Storylines Anyway...

do you really expect people to real ALL of your description? I couldnt do that. My answer is I used to watch wrestling in the early 90's. back then the acting and story were the reason I watched because it was fun seeing your favorite wrestler beat up a bad guy. also the women of the WWF were always so attractive. Besides, if it werent for story then whats the point of watching fake wrestling? It would have to be real or nobody would watch it. I think most people wouldnt watch real wrestling without a story anyway. Would you? The thing I dont like about wrestling is that they discard wrestlers after they feel their popularity goes down. I would like to see Lex Luger and Yokozuna and Bret Hart or Stone Cold still wrestling.

let me just get this outa the way: holy shizzle thats a long description!
i read it all and i gotta say that you're right bout storylines keeping this industry up. but there are some people that watch because they like the actual wrestling. sadly, they're a bit of a minority. me? i'm kinda neutral. its good if the wresting can keep peoples attention for the DURATION of the match (which, you gotta admit, it might only hold attention for the duration if its a match involving weapons of some sort. not saying all the time, but some of the time, yeah...)
another reason that people shy away more from the actual wrestling is because some peoples matches are a bit repetitive. lemme use cena as an example. he uses the same damn moves over and over and almost in the same damn order. oh come on! like i really wanna see him win with the fricken worst finisher ever... again!
really well thought out question. *applauds* you get a star for dis one :)

I tried to read the whole thing. Really I did....but it's really, really long.... So here's my answer:
I love being entertained. At first I watched wrestling because of the actual wrestling. But after a while, I was intrigued by these storylines. I know that it's all acted/scripted, but so are movies and television shows!
So I watch for BOTH the wrestling and the storylines; because the combination of the two is pure genius! Plus, not only are these people talented wrestlers, most of them are talented/believeable actors (Kelly Kelly aside)...and I respect them even more for that!

I assume that for the older fans the wrestling is more appealing, & for the younger fans its the storylines(I could be wrong, but that's just my assumption). For me, its both. I love to watch a good wrestling match(like the Triple Threat Match on SD last week, now THAT was a good match) but I also like to see a good storyline cos its fun to watch great wrestlers & good storylines keep me interested every week. If the wrestling is bad but the storyline behind it is still good, then I'll still be interested & vice versa

I do agree to some extent , the story lines are a necessity but if all they did was talk who would watch ? The constant battles of good vs. bad are I think what really keeps us coming back for more . We enjoy the battle of the shows , both verbally and physically . These shows are definitely choreographed ,scripted etc. but what show is not today ? However these people do get hurt .. badly sometimes for our entertainment , so I have alot of respect for them .

I'd like to think that I watch it for both. The storylines always make me more interested but if it's not going to have some good amount of pure wrestling in it, I couldn't care less for it.
Also, WWE and TNA are more storyline based for me but I like to watch particular matches from ROH, Pro Wrestling NOAH, FCW, and more without knowing the storyline.

to be honest, in this day of time, everybody would think its boring if all they did was wrestle, the story lines is what get people to keep watching even if we know its a story line, think about it would you actually watch a movie if it wa a plain ole movie, we want action, comedy, relationships, all that kind of thing, if all they did was wrestle then i honestly think it wouldn't be nearly the amount of people watch it
i do understand that the story line is of course fake and the actual wrestling is some what fake because they try not to hurt each other but i also understand that its still hard on the body and those power moves really do hurt

Yeah, me too, I'm only interested in the storylines, because that's what tells you what's going on between the wrestlers, not the matches, the matches are just made to watch people fight, the matches are made to see some people in pain, the storylines tell the true story going on around.

I think that we watch wrestling for both the storyline and the actual wrestling. Without story-lines we would just have guys fighting for no particular reason like MMA and let's face it that would be kind of boring. Story-lines have become a necessity in wrestling. They makes things more interesting.
