How do i become a resident of arizona?

I just recently visited Arizona and looked at a few schools such as ASU and I am thinking of going there. my girlfriend and her family are moving down there in a year or so. Could I live with them and have them claim me so i would be considered a resident or is there another way so once I go there i am considered one , except for joining the military or job transfer?

    Arizona Residency Requirements

Arizona requires a year of residency, and says residents are those who intend to remain in Arizona. They generally say that if you are attending school as an out of state student you cannot gain in state status.

However if you are paying your own way and are not dependent on your parents, if you have employment in Arizona, an Arizona Driver's License, register to vote in Arizona, register your cars in Arizona, etc etc AND you create no reason to believe you intend to leave Arizona permanently, you should be able to do it.

If you are living in Arizona as a non-student for a year and not dependent on your parents, you should be able to qualify.

A big part of the question though will be what you put on your financial aid forms If you use your out of state parents to obtain financial aid and you are claimed on taxes as their dependent you'll be denied residency.

If your friends parents become your legal guardians and claim you on their taxes and they are Arizona residents you should be fine.

Now realize that I applied for residency and had every single thing the book listed and was denied because the guy in financial aids was a ball-less wonder who didn't want to risk making a decision someone would disagree with at a higher level. His exact word were "I don't what more you could have done."

There is an appeal process and I won on appeal but that means going into a depositin where five or six people are asking questions to determine if you are really a resident or just trying to get out of paying the extra tuition...

Sp remember the standard is that you want to live in Arizona not that you want to come to Arizona for school... and by the time you are done you won't want to go anywhere else.

If you're trying to establish residency for in-state tuition, you need to either graduate from an AZ high school, show that you've lived in state for at least 1 year (and it doesn't count if that year was spent as a student receiving parental support from out-of-state, you have to be an independent AZ taxpayer), or have some other weird exception like being military or military spouse. Sorry.
