The trip between Penn Station NYC and Union Station Washington, DC, on the fastest ACELA train is 2 hours and 48 minutes (without delays) each way and cost $155.00 each way.

Do not take the train. It's a ripoff. A one way ticket on Amtrak from NY to DC is $72. However, on Megabus it's $8-$25. Amtrak only saves an hour compared to the bus. Reserve your Megabus trip a month in advance. Purchase the ticket online. Print out the ticket. On the day of the trip show it to the driver.

It is possible, but that's a very long commute. Most people who make it work go down for the whole week, and then come back on the weekends. You may want to look into flights - sometimes the commuter flights aren't much different than the train prices.
