SPEED TV: Have they lost touch with their viewers?

When SpeedVision started up, they had all types of racing - and from all over the world. World Rally, Australian Touring, even some big rig Tractor Racing from Europe (I really enjoyed that) and more that I can't even remember.

In the last year or so, they have decided to appeal to non-race fans with reality stuff like Pinks, Blues (just kidding), Passes, Bullsquash Run, and a bunch of stuff that isn't really true racing. Oh, and let's not forget the Whips, the Low Lifes and the Pimps (Wait! Maybe the real pimps are the ones doing SPEED's programming..). I really miss the World Rally, and can't get A1GP either.

So if you're a major network freak and love reality programming, I guess you wouldn't mind what SPEED has come to. If you're a true sanctioned-race fan, how do you like hours on end of non-racing reality shows? Is SPEED being true to their original mission of bringing racing programming to the US viewer or are they just caving into profiteering and going for cheap reality shows?

Update:

NOTE: 25usac ~ you were close but just a little off. Actually, according to Reference USA (a library subscription database) SPEED is owned by News Corporation (that Rupert Murdock outfit) which also owns Fox. Apparently Fox has been given a free (?) hand in SPEED network ops. There's your reason for the types of changes right there.

The NASCAR connection isn't a legal one, but I'm sure they have a liplock on Fox/SPEED or vice versa. Sort of like a (*wink*) brother-in-law relationship. It's pretty obvious there's a fair amount of inbreeding between the three organizations. Probably a great big daisy chain considering the players involved!

SPEED has lost me over the last year... Their coverage of stuff has dropped off greatly, and I went from probably watching SPEED 80% of the time I was home, now down to 20% at the most. I don't know what it is, but they need to get back to more RACING. No reality BS...

Agree with you 100%. I used to love watching the Hooters Pro Cup Series because I personally knew some of the competitors. Last summer I could never catch it...no consistency whatsoever. I hate all of the reality junk....including Pinks....who in their right mind would race for pink slips. I would love for them to get back to their roots....and actually show racing programming. I know that the reality stuff is cheaper....but c'mon Speed get with it....like NASCAR you are alienating too many fans.

    Just an opinion as always.

  • I like all those shows. Especially Pinks All-Out. When they came to my hometrack, Gateway, they had the largest crowd ever to attend a race there! And that tracks been there in one form or another since the '70's! They had to turn people away.

The only thing that is pissing me off is Pimp My Ride. I quit watching MTV 10 year's ago when they sold out, now SPEED wants me to watch 5 year old episodes of that crap!! I don't think so.

You know, a lot of networks start out with good ideas then for some reason, they hire morons to do their programming for them. I agree with you about Speed. If it isn't NASCAR, I dont' watch it.

BBC America did the same thing. They used to have really good entertainment from the U.K., then they got lazy and started putting on garbage. I used to watch them more than any other channel, now I never watch them.

Does anybody really think that the brightest people among us are running things?

The original concept of SpeedVision was great. It covered all forms of motorsports. That all changed when the network was bought by NASCAR and they hired FOX to run it. The non race shows(low life, wrecked, etc) are there because NASACR does not want people to see what real racing is.

I think its everyone's opinions to themselves. I already have DirecTV and I love it. The cost is perfectly okay for me and I don't like cable. I don't think having a sat. dish makes a person's house ugly, thousands of people have them and unless you stick them everywhere around your house, they are not cumbersome at all. I personally don't think cable is all that great, myself and locally, cable rates just keep on rising and they keep dropping channels that DirecTV is picking up. Its more cost effective to stay with/keep/go with DirecTV. I love Passions and am excited to continue to watch it. I don't know if iTunes will carry the show anymore either, I thought I read in Entertainment magazine that iTunes and NBC can't decide on price negotiations so those that watch it on iTunes may soon be out of luck there as well. At least DirecTV is trying to keep the show online at any rate. But then again, its everyone's opinions. Many people are going to DirecTV...I don't necessarily think that the move alone is making Passions lose viewers, its the content of the show. They need to liven it up again.

I agree with you, there are plenty of good series especailly in Europe, the DTM of course but also, the WTCC and even the BTCC, great touring car racing, the FIA GT is awsome too, now the only thniang that I love is the cover for the American Le Mans Series ! plusand of their good coverage for NASCAR weekends !

ya i agree, that bull run show....well i havent even bothered to watch it because it doesnt seem exciting. I do like pinks though, and pass time (im into non professional drag racing lol) . oh and as far as pimp my ride, is that a frikin joke??? why r they airing that old ridiculous show. and the show about low riders seems boring. i think i watched it once.

  • Cant NASCAR get its own network!

The MLB,NBA,NHL,NFL and even PGA have there own channel cant nascar have theres or atleast cant speed cover all real motorports not car shows and shows about homies and there nice hot rods!!!!!!!!
