Why won't my overtired 8 week old baby take day naps?
Hi, my 8 week old daughter sleeps from 9 at night to about 3 in the morning, wakes for a feed, then resettles and sleeps again until about 6:30 when she wakes up for another feed.
Other than night sleeps, during the day she is probably getting no more than 3 or 4 hours tops through the whole day, all broken up in little catnaps of anywhere between 5 mins to 1/2 an hour.
The rest of the time she is crying and wanting to sleep,
Is this normal?
How can i get her to sleep for longer periods, so she isnt so tired, and so hard to settle to sleep? I'm trying to put her to sleep as soon as i see any tired signs, but it is hard when she seems tired all the time.
All suggestions from Mums and Dads welcome!!!
I forgot to mention, she is breastfed, and is swaddled when put to bed.

Your baby is getting a lot of sleep at night so when you add the amount during the day, you may find, and ask a child health nurse here, that they may be in fact getting enough sleep.
There is an option, that I was told and it works for calming babies ready for sleep, but also if they are colicky. It is simply to either make a bottle of chamomile tea, with no sugar, and let it cool to the right temperature and let them have a couple of sips. Otherwise, which is the one my two preferred, was putting one or two chamomile tea bags into their bath. Essential oils are too strong to help settle babies, but the tea is not as strong especially when you consider how dilluted it becomes in bath water. The calming properties in the chamomile help to settle in gas they may have in their systems, and also works to calm them.

If it were my child I would take her to the pediatrician. Ask the doc about maybe switching formulas, checking for sleep apnea, gas, or any digestive problems...since those are the most common in newborns. If it helps any, my oldest was the same way. After having three more I know now that his formula was way wrong for him. Eventually he seemed to nap for longer periods of time..but it took a while.
Also, you might try gas drops..you can get them almost anywhere. Or different methods of burping. DIfferent sleep positions. Or if you don't already, try swaddling her. Or a binki maybe?
I hope all goes well. :)

My son is 7 weeks and exactly the same. I usually swaddle him in his blanket that sometimes helps, as flaying his arms about wakes him.
