A "charset" question: Which is more "convenient"?

ISO-8859-1 vs. utf-8... Which is better for an "ordinary" HTML (4.01) file? The original document is in English; no other non-English characters in the document.

Update:

I used to use ISO-8859-1 but was told utf-8 better.

For my latest post I used utf-8 and was shocked to find I had to change all the ' " - to ' " – etc., otherwise they would not show up correctly....

Not sure if it was due to my change of charset or what else.

Update 2:

oops the codes won't show up here.

Update 3:

But my documents are in English, and only English. Is it really necessary? Utf-8 has given me extra work of converting marks into codes. All I have is the good old Notepad. Anyway thanks for your answers. I will put this to vote. I also look forward to better explanations. Thanks again...

I will have to go with utf. Only because I haven't a clue what you're talking about and that's the answer that everyone else is giving!
