Is it possible to sell a dog for $3000?
I'm looking at all these high end big dogs and people are charging $2500-3000 per dog. I'm thinking to myself, who the hell buys these things. Well my question is, who the hell buys these things?

I only know the prices for maltese.
An average pet quality male from a show breeder/reputable cost $1500+ and females $2500+ Maltese have a 70% chance of having boy puppies than girls, and EVERYBODY always wants a female puppy to dress up and put bows in her hair.
The top maltese breeders prices average $3000-$5000 for pet qualities.
Show quality maltese are priced $4000+ based on the breeder.
This is one of the top tier maltese breeders and he has a pet quality puppy for $5000 right now(and the puppies parents are gorgeous!): chrismanpuppies.com/
My pet quality maltese, Gigi, was $2500 from a show breeder.
EDIT-If you buy your puppy from any breeder, the ONLY dogs the breeder should be breeding together are champion dogs(but there are exceptions)! The breeder should ONLY be breeding to better the breed to the standard! Your puppy's pedigree should MOSTLY consists of champions! If you want your puppy to live many healthy years, you should ONLY but your puppy from a breeder!

My dogs start at $15,000 and go up from there. There are no champions...I deal strictly with working lines. What they're paying for is having an expert select the dogs that have the correct temperament to protect them under any circumstances, play safely with their children, be healthy and have 18-24 months of extensive training. My clients are everything from celebrities, professional athletes, fortune 500 CEO's to everyday 9 to 5'rs that have had something bad happen to them. I've had people that wouldn't return to their own home until I was waiting there with a dog. Piece of mind is a high priority for some people.

THE ONLY DOG I WOULD PAY $3000+ IS FOR POLICE WORK OR A DOG THAT HAS MAJOR CHAMPION SHOW QUALITY FOR ABOUT 20-80 GENERATIONS PAST BUT FOR PEOPLE TO BUY A $3000+ DOG AND HAS AS A "PET QUALITY" THEN THAT DOG SHOULD BE DIP IN GOLD! LIL J/K

A good friend of mine just paid 10 thousand for a stud dog that is a grand champion and had him flown from germany...and yes, she's a show person and breeds. But those types of dogs are few and far between....
Personally the only way I'd pay that much is if the dog sang, read poetry, tap danced, and did dishes...

Other reputable breeders or pet owners looking to own a dog from a specific line - German bred GSD or a "rare" breed. Show/Breeding prospects are usually the ones going that high are they are from impeccable bloodlines.
And then there are the idiots who shell that kind of cash out for a designer mutt. Go on kijiji and look in their pet section. Those people have BALLS

Some people who are purchasing show quality dogs pay that much money. I have two Portuguese Water Dogs and they weren't cheap. They are amazing animals, but I was really paying for the above average attention given to health and breeding.
That's not to say that shelter dogs are not wonderful! They are every bit as deserving of a good home as these expensive dogs. In fact, I would urge someone to look in a shelter before committing to the expense of a high quality show dog.

Depends on what you are buying it for. If you need a good quality breeding dog, or you need a working dog, that either does field trials or is going to do protection work, you want a really good dog. You have to pay for that.
I personally don't understand it either, but hey, if someone wants to spend that and they have the money, go for it.

People that want titled dogs already, people that are into strong showing them....people that want a dog already fully trained for the ring, agility or obedience trials.....that is who...and lots more pay more than the 3,000.00 for the quality bloodlines, you have the bloodlines, you are gonna get the money.
However, dogs with the bloodlines, those breeders, do not sell for the money, it is to produce the near perfect breed standard dog....and show them, title them, and then comes the money later.......but you won't get an out right sale of the dog, there will be stipulations and a contract, like they usually stay co-owner, dog does not show to it's potential, then they have the right to get the dog back if you wish to hand over the dog and papers back to them...
My brother in Alaska, for over 20 years is a breeder, owner, handler, trainer, of Alaskan Malamutes, he trains them for sled dogs, show dogs, and his sled dogs trained, do not go for under 5,000.00 ever.....and he remains co-owner of every dog he sells......he will not let a dog go till at least 3 yrs old, fully sled trained....showing, he will let a show prospect go 1 yr old......he has 5 females, and only breeds each once a year, sometimes he will skip a year......
Like all reputable breeders do, they do not do it for the money, cause it costs so much for entry fees, training, travelling to shows, your expenses outweigh the cost of the dog when sold, that is another reason the great bloodlines go for so much,.
I have Demon, my Min. Schnauzer, we paid 2500.00 for him at 8 wks old,due to his bloodlines........,both his parents are champions, champions on both side of pedigree way back.......he was worth every cent of it.....
Pepper RIP, one of my previous Min, Schnauzer, when we got him for showing, he was 1100.00 back in 1988, and I thought man, but now, his price due to his champion bloodlines would be triple the price we paid.......
It's not the money, but wanting the best to show.
Now, some pay this much just to have the dog as a pet...that is up to them......but why pay that much for a designer breed, cant be shown, go adopt one instead.......

Most dogs that go for these high prices are quality show dogs from choice breeders. People who want to show or breed dogs will pay high prices for a quality dog.
Also these new "designer "dog "breeders" try to get high prices for their mixed breed dogs.
Personally, I'll take my rescue dog any day.

Usually dogs are only sold for this much because they are either a rare breed or they are of a champion bloodline, meaning that they have a chance of being a show dog.
