Stay away from Frayser, Raleigh, Whitehaven. Those are areas where crime is more prevalent. If you stay downtown - just be careful at night. If you've got someone with you, I wouldn't worry. Police are everywhere, especially on Beale Street, so it is very safe. Midtown can be sketchy depending on what part you're in. Just stay in the part with the nicer houses and you'll be fine. It's not that hard to tell when you're in a rough part of town - just like anywhere else.
If you're going in May, there's Memphis in May to go to. It's a music festival with lots of food contests, museum tours, that kind of stuff.

You must eat some of the great BBQ that Memphis offers. See Sun Records where Elvis got his start plus Graceland where the king lived, died and is buried. Go see the ducks at the Peabody, hang out on Beale Street. Enjoy your trip!

Gina is right, also not far from Memphis is Mud Island, or Tunica if you are into gambling.
There are some bad areas, so beware.
Have fun!
