Why are Pittbulls the first one's to get killed?

I've seen on tv that they are the first ones to get killed. Almost like the first or second week. Why? I know they are the "Bully" breed but its not fair and they make them die so slowly. I know its their job but its not cool that they do that to them.

Please answer my question :]

Because many people see pits as dangerous and do not want to adopt them. And pits make up 35-50% of most shelters. So you do see more pits being killed then other dogs. It is very cruel, but without euthanasia, there would be so many more dogs without homes and there would be nothing to do with them. They would be running the streets.

pits are so over bred right now. everyone feels the need to breed there pit and bring a bunch of puppies in the world and no one to take care of them. shelters get so many of these dogs and cant possibly take care of them all and most people wont adopt a pit. the media has tainted there reputation, saying that they are evil man eating monsters. which couldnt be further from the truth. even when fought it was frowned upon to have a human aggressive pitbull. they would stand in the ring so the dog could see them, because allthe pit wanted to do was please its owner. if there dog was about to loose they would often snatch there dog up and leave. the ones fought were often family pets too. they have never been bred to be human aggressive. now a days alot of people get them because they look mean and tough and try to make them mean a tough, then cant keep a handle on there dog and makes it hard to own the breed for the rest of us responsible owners. they actually pass there temperament test with an 85% which is in the top 95% of all the dogs tested. they score higher than cocker spaniels, german sheperds, and labs.. (im not saying any of them are bad dogs, im jsut making a point that pits arent viscious) here is a link to a video id like you to watch its only like 3 min long and its very informative on how the breed is treated as a whole.

I don't think they are made to die anymore slowly than any other breed and by law they have to be held as long as any other breed. The exception is one who has bitten someone and they are put down at the request of the owner.

I do think it is a sad shame that so many are deemed "unadoptable"

because of the way they have been treated.I have an aging APBT and an almost 3 year old Amstaff and I could never ask for any dog to be any better than these two dogs are.

Its a shame more people don't get to know these breeds before selling them out as "vicious".

Our County animal shelter gets predominantly two breeds: pit bulls and chihuahuas. They get very few other breeds. The reality is that not many people want to adopt them and they get a lot that have been fought or are aggressive because who owned them. So they screen the pits very carefully. Only the ones that pass the behavioral and health tests with flying colors get put up for adoption. Which is a select few.

Don't blame the shelters - blame the jerks that selectively breed them for aggression (or just let them breed randomly because they don't spay and neuter their dogs) and then screw them up by trying to make them tough or by fighting them.

ok first of all i'd like to address Norbert P's comment by saying that pit bulls are not any more dangerous than any other breed who is left in the hands of a bad owner. every dog has the potential to be a vicious/ dangerous dog if trained or abused to be that way. pit bulls are put to sleep mostly because bad owners have trained them to be attack dogs or for dog fights, which causes the shelter to have to classify them as unadoptable. it's not the shelter's fault. they have to worry about the liability issues and legal issues of adopting out any dog. if a dog is known to be aggressive (no matter what the breed) they can not adopt it out because they risk a law suit, and then the closure of the shelter. due to people allowing dogs to breed at a ridiculous rate, shelters have no choice but to euthanize to make room for other dogs who need to be taken in.

i dont understand what you mean about making them die slowly. they use euthanasia just the same on any dog and it is painless and quick. the real issue is irresponsible owners.

I know what your saying. My argument to the whole case is that even though Pitbulls are the dog of choice for dog fighters, once we kill them off, they'll start using little poodles or some other breed to dogfight. And it's not just Pitbulls, it's also the other "bully" breeds like rottweilers and dobermans. I think it's immoral and disgusting and that it's the owners fault for choosing to fight the dog.

I have never heard of this before, but i do know in my province it is against the law to have a pitt bull and i'm sure they are often euthanized at the pound and what not.

A friend of mine works as animal control and they found a litter of pitt bulls that weren't legal and they were told to euthanize the 10 pups.

Instead, they flew them out to a shelter in a different province where they're not illegal and where they were adopted out. a happy ending.

They also have bad names because of the idiot skids who take these animals and make them vicious to protect their drugs and whatever else they're doing illegal.

Skids take the dogs bad side (that every dog has) and they empathize it in the dog... it's quite disgusting if you ask me.

Again.. 99% of the time.. it's the owners fault!

    in my opinion anyway.

They have a high reputation of attacking small children/ various individuals. Alot of society sees them as monsters to be truthful. They think that pits are an evil breed and highly deadly. Honestly it's all up to the owners how the pits act. Especially if they have been fought then people think that they can not be rehabilitated to be a house pet.

And its definitely not right to single out this breed.

Because there are so many of them in shelters, and so few adopters for them. Humane euthanasia is not a slow process, but quick & painless. Unfortunately not all big city & rural shelters have funding for vet care & euthanasia, and gas chambers are still in use.
