How much for cell phones for a family in Japan?

We are going to live in Japan for a year. If we were to get 3 cell phones for our family (with 90%+ of the phone calls being between family members) how much will it cost to purchase/rent the phones for a year and how much will the least expensive calling plan be monthly?

I was poking around and found this site but maybe there are better ones: http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/charge/discount...

Also the above site doesn't seem to talk about the phone, just the monthly rates.

Softbank's White Plan is going to most likely be your best bet. The basic plan is very inexpensive (¥980/mo), calls to family members are free, and calls within Softbank's network are heavily discounted (though rates to other parties are more expensive).

If you take basic handsets that are not the newest models you'll get off very inexpensively on costs. Subsidies on handsets have been cut quite a bit but older model handsets are still relatively cheap.
