Christians: why do you reference bible verses?

When you're having a discussion with those who don't recognize the bible as an authority? Wouldn't it make sense to try to establish the bible as something that can be viewed as an authority before referencing it?

And isn't it completely silly to reference the bible to show why the bible should be considered an authority?

In response to Cebsme, first of all, we reference the Bible to show Christians how ridiculous it actually is.

Secondly, I agree with the asker of the question. I assume that if I start quoting Harry Potter at you as if it were all true, you would think I'm a little loony. That is exactly what it is like when someone quotes the Bible at us. We don't believe ANY of it, so it doesn't bother us in the least when your Bible says that we will perish whilst you live forever, because we know it to be false. Your Bible means nothing to us, except that it can be a decent read when you are bored.

It totally depends on what the question is. If it requires the use of Scripture, I have no problem using it, although I'm much more likely to use it in response to a question from a fellow Christian.

Usually, I will use it when someone asks why I believe what I believe. In this case, I feel that it's completely appropriate. And of course, there are those questions which ask for a specific Scripture reference. I would look pretty silly answering those with quotes from Gone With The Wind, now wouldn't I?

I read your profile and saw that you were raised a Mormon and are now an atheist. I think if I were raised Mormon I would become atheist as well. Mormonism is almost as slanderous as Catholicism. If you are truly interested in whether it is possible to establish the bible as authority or not please take the time to view the following article

    Reasons to Trust the Bible

    http://www.watchtower.org/e/200711/article_03.htm

In the article you will find a brief review of the five major reasons the bible is trustworhty: Historical Soundness, Candor and Honesty, Internal Harmony, Scientific Accuracy, Fulfilled Prophecy

If you open your mind to the possibility it can be very faith strenghtening.

Because God's authority is what matters to me.

You ask me a question about my Faith in the LORD, a question about my life (which is guided by the Spirit of God), a question about God Himself - I answer with what has authority on the matter: His WORD!

I don't tell you upon which standards you should be making your decisions, but as far as I am concerned, I will first and foremost seek His approval (not yours!).

The Bible is what I live by. The Bible is what I answer with.

I reference the verse so they can see that it is in the bible, it's not something I just made up.

I don't care whether they believe it or not, I want to make sure I back up what I am saying with the correct verse. And what do you know? they might actually look it up!

Most such persons have never really read that bible, or if they have then they must have a retention problem. In it there are so many ugly things and their god is the worst criminal ever mentioned. A murderer that has never been surpassed; especially killing of children, rape, stealing, looting and burning whole towns. Anyone who can seriously worship what is in such a book and that god, has to be mentally sick.

It is considered a world wide authority

It has been around for a long time

Sometimes it says it better that I can

It acts as an anchor for conversation

It supports an opinion, even if you do not agree on the source

This is R&S which impels a standard area of use

Whether it is the word of God or not, it has alot of good writing

Since Gods Word IS the ONLY TRUTH......one can not reference anything Greater. History Itself proves the Bibles Truths

but ask yourself, why do you reference men who say something is real when its nothing but a lie to obtain federal funding and to give them a paycheck ? Does the Word Scientists come to mind ? Evolution ? Where is the truth in it ? where is the proof in history of it ? And no there is NO fossil record or anything that shows evolution down through history, just YOUR reference books of a man who claims its a fact when its Not. So who reads a fairy tale ? seems to me evolution research science is the biggest fairy tale of them all .
