Traffic court question?
Wife is in court tomorrow. Driving without insurance. We bought a car, and took a couple days to get insurance on it.
Of course she was pulled over.
We're in MN, she is freaking out and thinks she's going to jail.
I told her at worst she'll get a fine and her DL suspended.
She doesn't have a bad driving record.
Anyone know?
"don't appear as "fine bait". municipalities are strapped for cash, so you don't want to look the type that is able to afford a hefty fine. show up in your work clothes instead of designer clothes, perhaps the judge will not pick your pockets."
Not a problem, she got laid off on Tuesday. More fun to add to the list.

1. get insurance on the car asap
2. be prepared to explain why you didn't have the insurance in place when you bought the car. You didn't go into details about that, however you better make it convincing and have documents to prove it. If lacking documents, provide a memo from work showing that the boss is working you long hours, insurance company keeps strange hours, day care issues screwed up your schedule, etc. Every little bit helps.
3. bring with you any documentation you need to substatiate the fact that this is not "business as usual" for you, i.e. pay stubs, bank account statement showing you had the money to pay but simply forgot, receipts for other insurance policies paid on in a timely fashion. If you could get your insurance company to vouch for the delay, that would be golden, but that might be a long shot. In any case, a memo from them stating you are a good customer and meticulously pay in a timely fashion would really help. Tell them the story, they might surprise you. You're buttering their bread.
4. don't appear as "fine bait". municipalities are strapped for cash, so you don't want to look the type that is able to afford a hefty fine. show up in your work clothes instead of designer clothes, perhaps the judge will not pick your pockets.
5. above all, avoid getting a suspension at all costs. there are a lot of fees associated with that when you go to get the license reinstated.
Good luck!
Good news is, the court summons is an automatic obligation; its all about showing the judge that you are not a scammer with a pattern of abuse and/or saving a buck by not being insured.

The real question is DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE ON THE CAR NOW? If so there is a good chance that the ticket will be dismissed or at least the fine might be reduced, usually there is no jail time with this type of offence unless she makes it a habit to drive with no insurance and has numerous tickets, her good driving record will work in her favor

no jail time.take some proof of insurance to court, the fine will most likely be less than a couple hundred dollars or mayby nothing if she explains the situation to the judge.Good luck

there is no jail time but you could get a hefty fine depending on how the judge sees it,

worst case scenario is a hefty fine. highly doubt you would receive jail time after all its not even a misdemeanor its a traffic violation.
