This can also be caused by driver errors, hardware issues and plain BSOD. Not just overheating being a culprit...

Really if you have your desktop out in the open, not in an enclosed place, or unless you have a heavy duty graphics card, such as a 260GTX, 280GTX or a 4850, 4870 graphics card inside the case, you shouldn't be experiencing overheating issues with a new product. Even the cheap builds that best buy and other stores carry that do not come with case fans will generally not overheat. Saying that, if you enclose the desktop in a confined space where no fresh air at all can get to it, it could. Generally speaking the stock heatsink on the CPU will move enough air to keep stock set CPU"s cool enough. Now if you are overclocking the CPU or have a big graphics card installed, it is possible you are cooking your desktop...

I wouldn't be surprised if you find that it could be a bad stick of ram, or having driver issues with the graphics card or onboard graphics conflicting with something like the operating system.

Like the other guy said, Speedfan is great, download it, that is if you can get your desktop to stay on long enough. If not, then you might try sending it back to where you bought it. If it were me, I would take one stick of ram out and see if the issue persists. If you have a graphics card installed and you know you have onboard graphics chip on the motherboard, uninstall the driver for the card and boot with the onboard chip and download the drivers for the onboard graphics. Then you can see from there if the problem persists...

Try booting to safe mode and see if it happens in safe mode. If it does not, then it is a software issue (virus or malware). You can also try runing a online virus scan from www.trendmicro.com (it will remove viruses too). If you can take a look at the motherboard and see if there is any funny stuff on it. Check to see if your desktop has free airflow where it is situated. Check the air coming from the fan to see if it is unusually hot Check to see it the system shuts down when in a particular program or when you are trying to access a program. You can also run a scan on the hard drive to see if it has any bad sectors.

    Download this program called Speedfan:

    http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

It will show you the temperatures of your computer. If you see temperatures that say "Core 0" "Core 1" etc. in the range of 60-70C+ then you have a heat issue with your CPU. Other temperatures shouldn't be any higher than say 50C, except for your graphics card which can idle around 60 or even 70 and still be alright, though you might want to increase its fan speed.

If your temperatures are in fact high, you will want to check fan connections to ensure that they are all functioning properly and blowing in the right directions and that your CPU cooler is firmly attached to your motherboard.

There are aftermarket 'cooling pads' accessible for the Xbox which help bypass air. A unfastened version of this may well be a mini electric powered fan such as you may purchase for a dorm room (objective,Walmart and so on.).
