What do you eat when you're poor?

I'm just curious what everyone out there comes up with when they're strapped for cash.

I've come up with some pretty weird things when we were hungry and the pantry was all but empty.

it is amazing how creative you can get when you have to. Some of my favorite receipies have come from cash-strapped times. My parents where both overseas during the war and they had a very very difficult time. Sometimes all they had was turnips or potatoes. One reciepe is amazing, please try this. Take stale bread, break it up in a bowl in layers. Mix up milk, water and jam or jelly, over each layer pour mixture until entire bowl is full then put in fridge with a plate weighed down with another container so you are pressing on the mixture hard. Excess liquid can be drained off. This would be desert for a family of four for a week.

Chipped beef on toast or more commonly known as SOS.

    Corn fritters. Easy and delicious.

Salmon patties made with salmon purchased at the Dollar store for $1.75 a can.

Liver and onions. Or sauteed chicken livers and onions over rice.

    Brown rice and bean casserole.

Twice BAked potatoes stuffed with ham, cheese and minced onion.

Stir fry dishes are really inexpensive. Serve over rice or pasta.

Tuna and noodle casserole. (Forget the canned soup and make your own cream sauce.

Have breakfast for dinner. We're doing that today. Eggs, pancakes and bacon.

When you are poor go ahead and spend that $20 for a big ham. You can eat on that for several days.

Hot dogs used to be cheap...not any more!

Quiche dishes are cheap if you make them from scratch...and you can use a cup of that ham you bought instead of bacon. Yummy.

The smartest thing to do if you are poor is learn to cook and shop if you aren't good at it. Convenience foods are budget busters.

Make big pots of soup, spaghetti sauce or chili. Cook a large pork shoulder and you'll have meat for burritos, slicing, quick stir fries, soup, etc.

I'm not food poor right now and I still do these things. Why spend a lot of money at the store that I don't need to spend. My mother used to say, "spend it one place and it's gone when you need to spend it somewhere else".

    Top ramen!

or If I'm all out, a simple PB&J sandwich works

Oh. I remember this one time when all I had in stock was crackers and mustard.... So that's what I ate: Mustard covered crackers

Top Ramen. They're like 10-30 cents per pack and they're good. I had a friend who used to put egg, tuna, and chicken in her's...that sounds pretty gross to me, but it kept her full :) Also PB&J...a classic.
