"Average daily temperature" is the average of the high and low temperatures for a given day. "Average monthly temperature" is the average of the "average daily temperatures" for a given month.

When only afternoon high temperatures are being averaged, it's often referred to as the "average maximum temperature" as opposed to simply "average temperature."

The temperature in the morning is probably lower than the temperature at 2:PM, right? Well, from 12:AM (midnight) until about 4:PM, the temperature is usually rising. Then, it begins to go down as the sun gets lower on the horizon. The "Average Daily" temperature is calculated by taking the temperature at regular intervals (like once an hour) and then adding up all the temperatures, and dividing by the number of intervals (like the 24 hours in a day.) The result will give you an "average daily temperature." The average monthly temperture is calculated the same way--add up the average daily temperature of each day in the month, and divide by the number of days in the month.

There are multiple definitions in use. Most common definition is the average high temperature reached daily over a period of time.

That period can be the whole year or a month. It can be decades.

The less common definition averages daily high and daily low over a period of time. This is open to some challenge as a true average because it does not weight the duration of various temperatures over the day. But it is a reasonable approximation.
