2001 Hyundai Accent tranny swap?
I have an 2001 Hyundai Accent with a automatic in it which recently blew. The car is still low miles and in good shape so i want to fix it and my plan is to put a 5-speed manual in place of the auto. I have worked in a tranny shop before so replacing a tranny is no problem for me but my only question is about the wiring? Do i have to swap out the computer and tranny harness or is their some way to work with that using the 5-speed? Also are the drive shafts the same and if you can think of any other problems I would run into. I know I have to add a clutch pedal and slave cylinder as well as the shifter and shifter linkage. Thanks for any help you can offer!

I would talk to an actual transmission mechanic about that because of the wiring issue. It doesn't take much for something to go wrong there - my mother had her transmission replaced and a faulty wire in the transmission kept making it fail our state's emissions test during inspection, and on mine, faulty wiring in the temperature solenoid kept making the check engine light come on even though there wasn't a problem with the transmission fluid overheating.
The early 2000 series accents have a lot of transmission issues - the week my car got a new one, there were 4 others in the same mechanic's shop as well with the same issues of the things blowing up, even with little mileage on them, and finding new or rebuilt ones can be a bit of problem (I had to wait 2 weeks before one could be found for my automatic). And according to the guy that did mine, finding a 5 speed one is even more difficult (don't know the real truth of that or not, but at least that's what I've heard).
But find a good reputable mechanic to talk to and see what they say because in the end, it might end up costing you more time and frustration trying to switch out all those parts when you can just slap another automatic in.

Forget what you heard about them being bad cars. People telling you that are probably sold on American made. I bought a new Hyundai in 2007 and I love it. I recommend you have the car checked out by a mechanic that you trust. You should do that with any used car you look at.
