probs with radiators..?

when my heating is turned on the downstairs radiators remain cold, this has happened gradually over a few days until today when they are freezing. I turned all the radiators upstairs off and now the ones downstairs are extremely hot. I let the system run like this for an hour and turned it off. Later I went and turned all the upstairs rads back on along with the downstairs ones and started the heating. All the upstairs ones are hot and again no heat to downstairs.

Ive had to turn the upstairs ones off again to heat downstairs.

the pump is in the hotpress and is really hot in either case.

Any ideas??

Update:

tried bleeding them, no air in rads. They are boiling all hot from top to bottom when they are on.

Update 2:

gnpondo...silly question prob, but where would I find that valve? There is a red knob with numbers on it that can be opened or closed, is that it? Its on a different pipe lower than the pump. Im scared of making anything worse lol.

your rads need balancing.the valves on the rad nearest to the boiler should not be opened as much as the last one on the pipe run

Sounds to me like you have a pump problem. Pump is buy passing hot water and not going to your radiators.

when you turn off the up stairs radiators you take the strain off the pump.

I have to say that you need to have someone that works on these things come out and check it.

Any case your heating system needs to be looked at by someone that is or knows how it works.

Without doing lots of work, just turn the valve to the upstairs closed halfway. this should divert the water to the downstairs and also keep the upstairs warm.

Sounds like your pump is on the way out.

If it is a new boiler, then the pump needs adjusting to the number of rads you have in the system.

This is best done by a Corgi Engineer.

What about your hot tap water? It sounds like you have a sticking and or failed solenoid valve; you will need to get a plumber out to sort it.

Have you tried bleeding them? Letting air out of the radiators.
